NOTICE OF AWARD
In recognition of your academic achievement, I am pleased to inform you that you have been selected to
receive the International Tuition Award #4884 for the 2017W session in the amount of $2,133.34. The

The award is being offered to support full-time study and/or research leading to a higher degree at The
University of British Columbia and will normally be paid only if you are registered as a full-time graduate
student at the University during the payment period.
The award will be disbursed as follows:
$1,066.67 will be paid on September 1, 2017

TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Award Payments. Awards issued by the University are applied first toward tuition and student fees. If the
amount of the award is greater than the outstanding fees in any term, the surplus funds are paid to the
student through Electronic Funds Transfer, or, if the student does not have banking information in SSC, in
the form of a cheque. An email confirming the funds transfer or cheque being available for pick-up will be
sent to the student. Cheques can be picked up at Brock Hall (photo identification is required). Start of
Program. Students will have their award pro-rated to the date by which they start their program, in cases
when they start after September 1. Completion of Program. Students will have their award pro-rated to
the end of the month in which they complete their degree requirements. Withdrawal of Program. Students
will have their award pro-rated to the date by which their withdrawal from their degree program is
effective. Leave from Program. Students are not eligible to receive their award during academic terms in
which they are officially on-leave from their program. Award Overpayment. Students will be required to
return any amounts issued to them for the time period after their effective completion or withdrawal date.
Hours of Employment. Students receiving scholarships whose cumulative total is equal to or greater than
$17,500 are required to limit their number of hours of paid employment to 12 hours per week, averaged
over the year. Requests for exceptions may be made to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
Taxation. Students should note that UBC does not deduct income tax from these awards, which are
considered income for tax purposes. UBC will issue T4A forms to students each spring.
Major University Fellowships. Students offered both major UBC fellowship funding and external
scholarship/fellowship funding for the same period will be required to accept the external funding. If the
value of the external funding is greater than the value of the UBC fellowship funding, the student must
decline the UBC fellowship funding. If the value of the external funding is less than the value of the UBC
fellowship funding, the student will receive the difference between the UBC fellowship and external
funding.
Multi-Year Funding. Continuation of multi-year UBC fellowship funding is conditional on satisfactory

standing and progress, length of time in program, and graduate funding received. If eligible to do so,
students who are awarded multi-year UBC fellowship funding are required to apply for Tri-Agency funding
to qualify for continuation of their UBC fellowship funding. Students who are eligible to apply for
Tri-Agency funding but do not do so will be considered ineligible for continuation of their UBC fellowship
funding.
International Tuition Awards - (i) Eligibility: (a) Student Visa: Students must hold a valid Student
Authorization. (b) External Funding: Students who receive external funding toward their tuition will have
their International Tuition Awards reduced by the amount of the external tuition funding, to a maximum of
the full amount of their International Partial Tuition Scholarship. (c) Full-time Registration: Students must
be registered full-time in an eligible graduate program. (ii) Citizenship Status. If a student becomes a
Permanent Resident of Canada, the tuition assessment is changed to domestic fee schedule as follows: (a) If
a student becomes a Permanent Resident on or before the tuition fee due date of the term, domestic fees
will be assessed for that term; (b) If a student become a Permanent Resident after the first tuition fee due
date, domestic fees will be assessed for the following term. (This date is indicated on the back of the PR
Card.) Students are no longer eligible to receive the International Tuition Award once their tuition
assessment is changed to a domestic fee schedule.
Regulations Governing University Awards

The following regulations, as approved by the University of British Columbia Senate, govern all awards
over which the University has jurisdiction.
1. The University does not approve student award terms inconsistent with human rights legislation.
2. Student awards issued by the University are applied to tuition and to other student fees owing. If the
amount of the student award is greater than the fees, the excess is paid to the student.
3. In any given year, if invested funds do not provide sufficient income to disburse any endowed student
award, payment of the student award may be reduced or withheld. The University does not guarantee the
payment of any student awards other than those funded by the University. The University reserves the right
to withhold student awards donated by individuals or organizations where the required funds have not yet
been received by the University.
4. The Senate reserves the right to change the terms governing a student award, so that they may better
meet new conditions, more fully carry out the intentions of the donor, or maintain the usefulness of the
benefaction. The rights so reserved shall be exercised by resolution of the Senate duly confirmed by the
Board of Governors, provided always that sufficient notice shall be given in Senate of any proposed change
and that the donor or representative, if known, shall be consulted about the proposed change.
Regulations Governing Graduate Awards
1. The fellowships and scholarships offered, unless otherwise stated, are available only to support students
engaged in full-time study and/or research leading to a degree at the University of British Columbia and
will normally be paid only if the recipient is registered as a full-time student at the University during the
payment period.
2. Students offered both a major university graduate fellowship (e.g. Killam Doctoral Fellowship, Four
Year Doctoral Fellowship, University Graduate Fellowship, or Affiliated Graduate Fellowship) and
external funding for full-time study and research at UBC will be required to accept the external funding. If
the value of the external award funding is less than the value of the major university graduate fellowship,
the student will receive the difference between the major university graduate fellowship and external award
funding.
Consent to Disclose:
I understand that by accepting this award, I permit The University of British Columbia to: (i) release to an
award donor, university faculty and administrative staff my name, address, telephone number, email
address, year and program of study, academic average and information relevant to specific requirements of
the award; (ii) prepare a brief biographical profile to be used for award presentation ceremonies,
publications and the Internet; and (iii) prepare lists of scholarship and prize winners to be published or
included in graduation ceremonies.
