MIRIAM COLLEGE

Miriam College is a premier non-profit, non-stock premier Catholic educational institution founded on
the core values of truth, justice, peace and integrity of creation. For more than 90 years, Miriam
College has offered programs primarily for young women at the basic, tertiary, and post-graduate
education levels, to prepare them to become effective leaders, lifelong learners, and productive
citizens.

The institution supports specialized centers engaged in women’s empowerment and gender equality,
peace education, environmental awareness, social justice work, and spiritual formation.

THE WOMEN AND GENDER INSTITUTE

OUR STORY

Maryknoll College (now Miriam College) was is one of the pioneersa pioneer of women’s studies in
the Philippines, having introduced a course on women and society as early as 1970. . As early as 1970,
the course Women and Society was introduced into the curriculum. In 1987, MC established the
Women’s Resource Research Center (WRRC) to respond to the integrative needs of women towards
social transformation.

Since its establishment, WAGI continues has been to be a strong voice for gender equality and
women’s empowerment. WAGI actively networks with strategic organizations and institutions at the
national, regional and international levels to bring gender issues to the forefront—the center runs
training sessions, women’s leadership programs and fora on gender in education, human rights, peace
and security, economic development, public service, and more.

‘WAGI’ is a Filipino term which means ‘to win’ in English. The term epitomizes represents the long-
term objective of the Women and Gender Institute, which is to achieve women’s empowerment and
gender equality in all areas of society and build a society where all genders win.—WAGI believes that
this will result in a win-win situation for all genders.

MISSION

The Women and Gender Institute charts the direction for the school’s women and gender programs
through initiatives in gender-fair education, feminist research, and advocacy on women’s rights. WAGI
offers cross-disciplinary perspectives on women’s empowerment, interlinked with democracy, human
rights, social justice, and value formation.
OUR PROGRAMS

GENDER-FAIR EDUCATION

As part of WAGI’s efforts to build a gender-fair education system, the institute offers a program that
This program integrates perspectives, values and strategies related to the mainstreaming of women’s
rights, and gender equality and equity in the curriculum, teaching strategies, student welfare and
administration at educational institutions. The gender-fair education program It aims to increase
awareness, understanding, and appreciation of gender and women’s empowerment among members
of the academe and other educational institutions through teacher training on gender-fair education,
research on gender socialization in the school system, and the development of gender fair materials
for instruction.

YOUNG WOMEN LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

The Young Women Leadership Program (YWLP) aims to enhance the political participation of young
women through leadership training focused on gender, human rights, and governance issues. The
program aims to transcend class, ethnic, political, and religious boundaries to bring young women
together in a space where they can envision and create concrete action plans toward a new paradigm
of politics that is informed by gender, human rights, and democracy.

GENDER AND DEVELOPMENT (GAD) AND PUBLIC SERVICE

WAGI affirms its commitment to institutionalize gender fairness by extends helping to government
institutions, non-government agencies, and academic institutions through its ladderized Gender
Sensitivity Training (GST) program. WAGI also collaborates works with private and public institutions
for various activities, such as the National Women’s Summit or and the National Conference on
Women’s and Gender Studies.

GENDER, PEACE AND SECURITY

The Gender, Peace, and Security Program seeks to highlight the gender dimension in war, militarism,
conflict, peace and security. It highlights the voices of women in conflict and post-conflict situations
and their valuable contribution to the articulation of an alternative security paradigm that is gender
responsive and inclusive of women's initiatives to end war and contribute to peace building efforts.
Through research, workshops, dialogues, networking and advocacy, it promotes feminist scholarships
and advocacy around gender peace and security issues.

Featuring the newest research and ideas on feminism, sexuality, and gender equality, WAGI’s annual
journal, Quilted Sightings,
As a resource, research and training institute, WAGI supports feminist research on a wide array of
topics. WAGI’s annual journal, Quilted Sightings, highlights research on gender, sexuality and the like.

MID-YEAR TRAINING SERIES

With 20 years of experience in advocating for women’s empowerment and gender equality, WAGI is
a pioneer in the field of women’s and gender studies. The Midyear Training Series, as part of WAGI’s
thrust to educate and engage different groups and organizations on gender issues, covers the most
pressing gender issues of our time, and is framed by the principles of including democracy, human
rights, social justice, values formation and national development. The annual, week-long intensive
course has included topics such as Gender-Fair Education (GFE), International Women’s Human Rights
(IWHR), Gender-Responsive Planning and Budgeting (GRPB), and Gender, Sexuality and Student Youth
Well-Being (GSSYW).

SPECIAL PROJECTS

GENDER, DEVELOPMENT AND ECONOMIC GLOBALIZATION

This program generates information and analyses from critical feminist perspectives on trade, finance,
international cooperation/aid, and economic globalization processes, in support of socio-economic
policy alternatives, and democratic and accountable governance. The program is especially focused Commented [D2]: Alternatives for what?
on promoting the analysis, advocacy, and mobilizing capacities of women’s movements and people’s
organizations, especially for economic and political restructuring and social transformation at local,
regional and global levels.
