Online Projects, Collaboration Sites and Publishing Opportunities

Lesson Idea Name: Life Cycle of a Plant

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 2nd grade
Content Standard Addressed: S2L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the life cycles of
different organisms. b. Plan and carry out an investigation of the life cycle of a plant by growing a plant from a
seed and by recording changes over a period of time.

Technology Standard Addressed: 3 – Knowledge Constructor

Selected Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity: PlantingScience

URL(s) to support the lesson: https://plantingscience.org

Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom:
Online learning projects teaches students to learn content that is standards-based, collect data,
produce original products, publish their own work to an audience, and engage with peers and
mentors. All of these use technology and online resources. Online collaboration sites allow students
to work with people outside of the classroom. Online publishing opportunities helps students
publish their work onto the web to allow other people to use it. All of these online projects uses
creativity by providing activities for students. These projects also allow students to think at a higher
level, connect their learning to meaningful connections, and keeps the students engaged throughout
the process. All of these support student learning in the classroom because they are performing at a
high LoTi level.

Some examples of existing online projects, online collaborating sites, and online publishing sites
are listed in order: Journey North and PlantingScience for online projects. Ask Dr.Math and Bugscope
for online collaborating projects. CNN iReport and KidPub are online publishing sites. All of these
resources have different abilities and opportunities for students in the classroom to use. I have
learned how to use these sites to an advantage to keep the students at a high LoTi level. Some
concerns about these resources is about the safety and privacy of the users. It is important to keep
parents and administrators updated about what websites are being used in the classroom involving
the student’s privacy. I can use these resources in the classroom by having them publish or
collaborate on their work with peers online.

What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?
Computer, Projector, and a screen.

Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: Students can work with their peers and collaborate on their findings about the life cycle of
plants so that those outside of the school setting can see their work.

b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): Students will create an original product after recording
their findings of the life cycle of plants and recording it over a period of time.

c. Higher-order thinking: Students are going to be analyzing, evaluating, applying, remembering, and
creating.

d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: I will help
out any student that needs help publishing their work so that other people on the website can view
their work.

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

Levels of Technology Integration (LoTi Level):

☐ Level 1: Awareness ☐ Level 2: Exploration ☐ Level 3: Infusion ☐ Level 4: Integration
☒ Level 5: Expansion ☐ Level 6: Refinement

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

I could use Universal Design for Learning principles to extend and support the learning experience for all
students by giving students printed instructions with pictures to help them navigate the website and also
students can listen to the teacher and follow along with her as she does an example herself.

Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies:

PlantingScience is a secure website which schools, teachers, students, and scientist mentors must be
registered to participate. PlantingScience complies with COPPA which requires parental consent for posting
school work and students 13 years old or younger.
Reflective Practice:
The activities could impact student learning by giving students an opportunity to learn outside of the
classroom and from other students and their projects. I could further this lesson by allowing students to edit
and share their published work and allow people to comment on it. I could use technology tools like a camera
or time-lapse app to take pictures day-by-day of the plants growing to post on PlantingScience.
