. Dinora’s Year in the U.S.

I am in the United States for a year as a foreign exchange student. I am from Brazil,
but I want to learn English. I am a student at a college in North Carolina. The
college is big. There are many buildings. There are two gyms and two cafeterias.
There is only one library, but it has many books. There are five computer labs on
campus. There are a lot of dorms, too. My dorm is a tall building with 20 floors. My
room is on the 15th floor. There are a lot of nice students here, but there aren’t any
from Brazil. I am a little homesick. My classes are okay, but difficult because my
English is not very good yet. My English teacher is from New York. There are 20
students in my conversation class – 5 from Mexico, 4 from Japan, 3 from Korea, 3
from Saudi Arabia, 1 from Poland, 2 from Vietnam, 1 from France and 1 from
Brazil – me! It is nice here right now. There are many benches outside. In the spring
and summer, students sit outside and talk. There is one problem with our school.
There are no parking lots for student cars, so I take the bus.

Writing Note
Singular nouns (one thing) need an article (a, an, the) or other word (e.g., my) in front of
them. Plural nouns (more than one thing) need an s.

Some nouns are proper nouns. Proper nouns are names(e.g., Ann, Brazil).
Be careful! Sometimes there is an adjective (e.g., big) between the article and the noun.
I live in a big house.

Some words can be either nouns or adjectives.

I speak French. (noun)
The French student is here. (adjective)

Walking: It’s Good for You

Let’s face it—our lives are busy. After a long day of work or classes, it’s very easy to skip
exercise. Gyms are expensive and crowded. You need other people to play soccer or
basketball. Some sports use special equipment. So why not walk for exercise? Walking has
important benefits, and it’s easy to do.

First, walking improves your physical health. About thirty percent of deaths worldwide are
from heart disease. Walking lowers your heart rate and blood pressure. It protects you against
heart disease. It also helps to prevent some forms of cancer. And it makes your muscles and
bones stronger. It can also help you lose weight.

Second, walking is good for your mental health. When older people walk, they remember
better. It also helps your sleep. And walking improves your mood. People who walk are
happier.
Third, walking doesn’t cost a lot of money. You don’t need anything special to walk – just some
good walking shoes and comfortable clothes. If you walk at night, wear light colors or carry a
light. Some people use a pedometer (something that counts your steps). A good goal is to walk
10,000 steps, or about 8 km, every day. If you walk, you save money on a gym membership.

It’s easy to start a walking program. If you don’t exercise now or you’re not very healthy, see
your doctor first. If you’re healthy, you can just start walking. After you get dressed and put on
your walking shoes, warm up by walking slowly for a few minutes. Then walk quickly for ten to
20 minutes. Swing your arms and stand up straight. At the end of the walk, you can cool down
by walking slowly.

As you can see, walking is safe, easy, and healthy. You can save money on the gym and on
doctor’s bills. You can lose weight and feel happy. So don’t wait—start walking!

Security Screeners

Security screeners have a very important job. They make sure that dangerous objects do not
get on a plane. Screeners check luggage, and they also check passengers. The luggage
moves through a machine. The machine shows the objects inside bags. A screener watches
the monitor and stops any luggage with something suspicious inside. Sometimes screeners
take the luggage to a table and go through it. Other screeners look at the passengers. In
some countries, the passengers usually go through another machine called a body scanner.
This machine shows things on the passenger's body. Sometimes screeners pull a passenger
aside and check for objects.

Because most airports are open 24 hours a day, security screeners usually work unusual
hours, and often work overtime. They need to pass credit and criminal background checks.
In most places, screeners have some training in a classroom and then more training on the
job.
