Review of Related Literature

11
Social network evolved since the internet the homology was first developed in the
1960’s.One of the first online communities was Usenet, which was created by Duke University
graduate student, TOM TRUSCOTT and JIM ILLIS (1980). Usenet was similar to discussion
forum where students can share their opinions and suggestion. In 1984, similar method of online
interaction called bulletin board system [BBS] was introduced, later the emergence of social
networks rocketed with the invention of WORLD WIDE WEB by British scientist, TIM
BERNERS-LEE, in 1991.One of the most dominant social networks in the history, Friendster, was
founded by Jonathan Abrams and launched in 2004, along with Friendster LinkedIn and MySpace
also become popular in their perspective fields. After 2003, the social networks become so popular
that by the time Facebook was launched in 2006, the internet users had more than two hundred
social networks to choose from nowadays, Facebook is regarded as the most successful social
network with over 1.06 billion monthly active users, 680 million mobile users, more than fifty [50]
million pages and [ten] 10 million apps. (April,2013 Data)

In the survey conducted by PEW internet project’s research, it shows that 67% of online
adults use social networks. This data describes the fact that social networks can be used to improve
the education of adults and students since them already have certain influence on the learners. The
main advantage is that students can further explore topic that they are interested in using online
social networking since they may have limited resources and time in school. Apart from that, adult
with unique interest it is not easy to find friends with SME interest to that or discuss with.

However, social networks link these people with the ones with smart passion where they
can interact with people from different parts of the world. People in networks while going to school
or job or having lunch and going back home. Integrating these times with the actual time they use
the networks probably during their leisure hours the result came out to be two hours per day or
more.

Most people assumed that being in touch with friends and receiving information as a
benefit while they regard in low security and privacy. Further, online bullying as major drawback
in weighing the advantage and disadvantage, 65% said using social networks is disadvantage while
the remaining percentage believed that there is more disadvantage to encounter with. However,
most people about [eighty] 80% said that they enjoy with current usage or social networks since
they are like tools to sure fresh their mind after working for a long time or to browse around when
they feel bored.

12
According to the Hudson group (2013), Social media has been criticized a lot due to the
effect it has on the way students produce and retain information. Some parents are of the opinion
that social media can be very distracting and harmful for students. On the contrary, social media
offers plenty of opportunities for learning and interaction. It is rather simple to see how students
benefit from social media. By using technology in classrooms, the young generation is paving a
new way of education and learning. Students are getting to explore and experience the world not
only by books and assignments; but also by adapting a new form of communication. In a world
where your networks and connections are important, graduates enter the workplaces with a lot
more to offer.

What exactly are students learning by using social media? Networks Social media
connections are designed to increase students networks, form communities and interact easily.
Today’s students are accessing Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and other such social networking sites
to connect and share information with those around them. One of the most fascinating things about
social media is the way the users can interact and engage with each other through a mere web
presence without having to meet someone in person.

Web rendezvous Students share personal information, links to other sites or comment on
someone’s post. By doing this, they get engaged with each other instantly. The use of social media
has made it easier and faster to interact with peers or teachers about class-related topics. In a world
where online engagements are important for businesses, these students are already experts at
developing an online presence. Students are also experts in interacting with others on the internet.
They know how to use basic as well as complex functions on various social media sites.

While the results seem to indicate that social media is an effective and useful device in
communicating with a mass audience rapidly, additional research on the subject is highly
encouraged. The overall responses proved to be thought-provoking, however, the answers of
thirty-nine responders only provides a glimpse into the current mindset of the general student
population at Eastern Kentucky University, particularly those who are members of active student
organizations. Based on the age range of the responders, there is also a degree of assumption that
the survey did not touch quite as many non-traditional students as hoped.

A wider assortment in age groups could possibly provide a more comprehensive analysis
of how social media impacts various generations differently, and whether they interpret its

13
usefulness the same way. The results show this gap, with 79.5% (31) of the responders between
the ages of 18-23, 10.3% (4) between 24-29, 2.6% (1) between 30-35, and 7.7% (3) age 36 and
above.

needed to test a theory to evaluate accurately describe the effectiveness of social media to their
academic performance.

Population and Samples

The researcher selected Grade 11 Cookery students as their primary respondents. Where in
the researcher used survey research design that evaluates students’ academic performance. From
thirty-nine (39) total population of Grade 11 Cookery the researcher used Slovin’s formula to get
the exact sample size which is thirty-six (36) Grade 11-Cookery students which involves 32 male
and 32 female with the age gap of 15-18 years old. By using non-random sampling the researcher
conducted survey through the use of questionnaires and let students answer the questions regarding
the effectiveness of social media to the academic performance.

Instrumentation

The researcher used survey through the distribution of questionnaire research design to
Grade 11 cookery students that includes 32 male and 32 female with the age gap of 15-18 years

15
old .Through the assistance of their adviser, the non-randomly selected respondents were given a
two pages questioners and let them answer based on their experiences and opinions in regard to
the effectiveness of social media then it was validated by the researcher using the mean and identify
the over-all average of the given answer. At last it is check and validated by the adviser using test-
retest.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researcher used techniques that are logically arranged from one step to another.

First, the researcher conducted a group discussion and validation of questionnaires. Then
the researcher sent letter to the teacher-in-charge of Caningay National High School - Banga
Extension together with the adviser of Grade 11 Cookery. On the day of distribution the researcher
distribute the questionnaire through the help of their adviser.

The researcher selects the respondents using non-random sampling then the questionnaires
were answered by the respondents. At the end of the survey researcher collected the questionnaire
and analyze the data based on given answers. The answers were computed using mean of the
population equals to the percentage of the over- all population.

Statistical Treatment of Data

Researcher uses mean to validate the data given by the respondents where:

18
% = f/n x 100

The (%) percentage is equal to the (f) frequency of the answer over (n) which is the total
number of respondents, and then it is multiplied by 100. The answer will be the mean or the average
answer given by the respondents. The standard is based on the 75% MPS of their given answer
which depicts the effectiveness of social media.

First, awareness towards students using social media is the most important part of learning it is
because, if the student posses’ awareness he/she is aware in dealing with social media. As effective

Furthermore if the student is possess aware he/she is safe online.

Secondly, it is responsibility of a student to be aware and vigilant in dealing with social media in

and integrating his critical thinking her\she gets the information he is the responsible in
scrutinizing if the article or the page is safe, reliable, and effective or not. For instance, he has a
responsibility to deal effectively to have effective and realistic learning to happen.

advice.

Student. Responsibility is to be aware and vigilant in dealing with social media. Student
is practicing and integrating his critical thinking he/she can have effective learning. For example,
before he/she gets the information he/she is the responsible in scrutinizing if the article or the page
is safe, reliable, and effective or not. For instance, he/she has responsibility to deal effectively and
to have effective and realistic learning to happen.

Teachers. Must advice their student in practicing good social media user. Wherein, they
can innovate but developed certain new ideas in creating better learning towards 21st Century
learning. In addition, teachers must conduct symposium and orientation to student on how to be
aware and be responsible in using social media.

Teacher must assist the following learning to students:

 Students know the social media and they are able to practice media literacy while
using social media.
 Assist the students on how to acquire efficient and reliable information from the
internet.

Parents. Plays important role in diverting child’s development to social media literate and
educated citizen in using social media. On the other hand, Parents must evaluate the social media
participation towards:

 If social is effective to their studies.

 They are aware in using social media.
 They are safe while the students are using social media.
 If the students are practicing awareness while they are using social media.

61
Schools administrator. Must possess awareness and being vigilant to the things made by
student in that way he /she can reinforce a project that develops learning method that helps every
student to manifest their learning as aid of new change and development.

Other stakeholders. Including Municipal officials and Barangay officials must take a look
on the computer shops if the practice of students in handling computer is beneficial or not. Hence
that computer games in getting rampant. This also helps the student to overlook their faults in
handling social media.

62
Reflection

Social media is important, but it must be used with knowledge and proper
education. Platforms such as Twitter, Instagram and Facebook allow students to voice their
opinion on anything that is going around the world. Students have their own accounts and
can do what they want with it. They can post their views whenever and however they want
to. The escalation of social media on academic performance has dramatically transformed
the Grade 11 Cookery student atmosphere round all over the institution. This has brought
up a lot of positives and negatives in the lives of students, but it’s a new generation where
technology is slowly replacing the human experience to an actual visualization of
knowledge in manifestation of creativity and skill for school development
Secondary school administration can facilitate effective learning by empowering student
and acquire effective and fast tool in learning.
Researchers learn that:

• Social media as vital tool in transforming lives of every individual.

• Being media literate is not all about being a good media user but being
a good information provider.
• Develop creativity in handling and enhancing student’s skill to widen
the idea of new generation.
• Guided to be the peace ambassador of goodwill and development.
• Social media as aid to manifest and acquire learning from one
generation to another.
