Read the magazine article in which four football pundits (A-D) express their view on the most hotly
debated question in modern football - Who is better: Messi or Ronaldo? Then answer the questions
(a)–(j).
A – Roberto Carlos
In my opinion, Cristiano is a special player because he is more decisive in Real Madrid than Messi in
Barcelona. Messi plays with Neymar, Suarez, Iniesta, Busquets, while Real Madrid squad lacks such
exceptional quality. But still Ronaldo dictates the games with his superiority in front of the goal. He
is a born scorer. If you look at the statistics, you won’t hesitate to agree that Ronaldo is the better of
the two. He has more club goals, international goals and hat tricks. He has even won a major honour
with his country- Euro 2016. You shouldn’t forget that Messi failed to win silverware with Argentina
on three occasions. That means Ronaldo delivers at club level and country level. Even if he scores a
lot, you can’t deny that Messi is a failure at the latter.
B – Xavi Henandez
The comparison makes no sense. Messi, for me, is the best player in history. When people talk about
numbers, I think what they forget is Messi is two years younger but still has more goals per game
than Ronaldo. And you can’t say Ronaldo is better because he won an International Competition with
his country. In fact, Messi won two international titles – Olympic Gold and Under 20 World Cup-
and he led his country to three consecutive finals. He won the best player awards in World Cup 2014
and Copa America 2015.Antonine Griezmann (a French player) won the best player award at Euro
2016 and Ronaldo was on the bench when Portugal won the final. More importantly, Messi is not
arrogant like Ronaldo. Instead he improves his teammates greatly.
C – Alex Ferguson
It’s interesting to me that we hear so much about two players these days: Ronaldo and Messi. Now
don’t get me wrong, Messi is a fantastic player, it’s like he’s wearing slippers when he controls the
ball. But here, for me, is the difference. Messi is a Barcelona player. But Ronaldo could play for
Stockport County and score a hat-trick. He has everything. He can shoot with both feet, head the ball
and he’s as brave as a lion. What’s more, he has pace and physicality. Messi relies too much on his
left foot and you see him scoring a header once in a blue moon. Ronaldo, however, is the definition
of a perfect athlete. Above all, he won Euro 2016 singlehandedly.
D – Pep Guardiola
Messi is definitely the best. He knows how to play, score and make the other players play. He is
always there. With all the respect to all the players, first to Cristiano Ronaldo - I think Messi is on
another level. Messi has vision and brilliance to change the game in a fraction of a second. Unlike
Ronaldo, Messi keeps giving defence-splitting passes and through-balls because he reads the game
like a supercomputer. Without goal scoring ability, Ronaldo is just an average player, but Messi is the
best playmaker. He’s a complete player. He contributes immensely to the team unlike selfish Ronaldo.
Yes, Ronaldo has scored hundreds of goals, mostly tap-ins, but how often does he dance through the
whole opposition and score a breath-taking solo goal?
