To Do: A solenoid engine which related to the principle of electromagnetism i.e.

which magnetic
force is generated when current is passed through a conducting coil. Where produced attractive/
repulsive magnetic force is used to harness a reciprocatory motion which is further converted to
rotary motion of a wheel with the help of a crankshaft. It can be constructed with coil, magnet,
battery, shaft, flywheel and a voltage source.

Objectives:
1. Discuss how a solenoid works
2. Use the magnetic force to produce mechanical work
3. Working prototype of the engine delivering constant RPM to a wheel (Observably constant).

II. Theoretical Background

The theoretical background on the electromagnetic force generated by the solenoid is implemented
to design a solenoid engine that aim to produce a mechanical work. We develop a type of solenoid
engine for future understudies relating to electromagnetism which converted magnetic energy to a
type of mechanical energy. This solenoid engine has a simple structure composed of coils and a
magnet. The work force by the solenoid depends on the number of coils turns, applied current, and
the type of magnet used, etc.
III. Purpose
The main purpose of this project basically deals with the electromagnetic concept which is used to
produce magnetic force to mechanical force to run the piston and that force is transferred to the
connecting rod that helps to rotate the crankshaft which how a solenoid engine yields the required
power.
IV. Materials
1. Wood – used for the platform and shaft
2. Engineering Plastic – used where the coil is turned
3. Bearing - used to enable rotational or linear movement, while reducing friction and
handling stress.
4. Coil - is consist of number of turns of copper wire wound on iron or former piece. Coil
works as electromagnet when the current is flowing through it. The turns ratio depends on
applied voltage. the more current coil becomes stronger electromagnet
5. Battery - is used to give electrical supply to induction coil and as main power source.
6. Switch - There is a switch between solenoid coil and battery supply for connecting and
disconnecting supply and for control constant current supply to coil.
7. Magnet – used for the electromagnetism specifically for repulsion and attraction to produce
work
V. Procedures
1. Prepare the materials needed
2. Make a rectangular-shaped board for the platform
3. Cut a two circular-shaped wood a large one (flywheel) and a small one (disk for switching)
4. Rewind the coil and put it to any tube in our case we used engineering plastic tube, then make
sure the coil is continuous and much better if it has more turns produced because the greater
number of coil turns the stronger the magnetic field
5. Connect the disk and the connecting rod
6.Put the bearings and the flywheel to the stand including the disk and rod assembly
7. Then insert the connecting rod to the hole of the engineering plastic tube
8.Lastly place the switch and attach it to the coil and the battery.

VI. Observations
We observed that the speed of the wheel depends on the intensity of magnetic field generated by
solenoid. Hence, high voltage will result in more rpm of the wheel, then magnetic force is generated
when current is passed through a conducting coil. The produced attractive and repulsive magnetic
force is used to harness a reciprocatory motion which is further converted to rotary motion of a
wheel.
VII. Problems Encountered

 It is expensive
 The coil needs to be continuous to avoid changing
 Battery needs to be in low capacity (mAh) in our case we used a powerbank, so it is
exploded
 Computing of how coil turns to produce a desired work
 It takes time to build it.
 The team encountered issues with the scheduling members found ways to use their time
efficiently.
VIII. Conclusion
After completing this project, teammates have concluded that a solenoid creates a electromagnet
used to produce magnetic force to run the piston and that force transferred to the connecting rod
and ultimately it rotates the shaft that delivers such power, It converts the magnetic energy
produced by solenoid into mechanical energy and then the speed of the wheel relies upon the
power of attractive field produced by solenoid. Consequently, high voltage will result in more rpm
of the wheel.
