CHAPTER 2 : Free Vibration of Single-Degree of-Freedom

Systems
Free Vibration of an Undamped Translational and torsion System
1- Find the natural frequency of vibration of a spring-mass system arranged on an
inclined plane, as shown in figure bellow:

2- A pulley 250 mm in diameter drives a second pulley 1,000 mm in diameter by

means of a belt (see Fig.). The moment of inertia of the driven pulley is 0.2 kg.m2 the
belt connecting these pulleys is represented by two springs, each of stiffness k. For
what value of k will the natural frequency be 6 Hz

3- Plot the variations of the natural frequency and the time period with static
deflection of an undamped system using MATLAB.

Assignment
1- A mass m is attached at the end of a bar of negligible mass and is made to vibrate in
three different configurations, as indicated in the fig. Find the configuration
corresponding to the highest natural frequency

2- The angular motion of the forearm of a human hand carrying a mass is shown in
Figure. During motion, the forearm can be considered to rotate about the joint
(pivot point) O with muscle forces modeled in the form of a force by triceps (𝑐1 𝑥̇ )
and a force in biceps (−𝑐2 𝜃) where 𝑐1 and 𝑐2 are constants and 𝑥̇ is the velocity with
which triceps are stretched (or contracted). Approximating the forearm as a
uniform bar of mass m and length l, find the natural frequency of the forearm.
