1.1 INTRODUCTION (NIFT)
 Slums can be defined as a residential area where dwellings are unfit for human habitation,
overcrowding, lack of ventilation or sanitation facility and having drinking water facilities
in unhygienic conditions.
 A slum is a densely populated urban area with a low standard of living. A squalid and
overcrowded urban area inhabited by very poor people
 Slums are –
-Unsafe and/or unhealthy homes
-Overcrowded homes
-Limited or no access to basic services
-Unstable homes during storms and earthquakes
-No secure land tenure
 Why develop slums?
(i) Population growth
(ii) Governance fails to recognize the rights of poor.
 What is slum rehabilitation –
Re-settlement will done on land occupied by jugghi-jhopri. The slum rehabilitation gives
home to the homeless people. This act was passed to promote the development of slum
areas
 Advantages of slums –
-People occupy less arable land
-People living in slums develop social skills
-Use less services, time and cost
 Disadvantages of slums –
-Un-safe, overcrowded disorganized and offensive people
-Polluted and harmful environment
-Streets occupied by unwanted elements
 Insitu slum rehabilitation
In this type of redevelopment slum peoples are shifted to vacant land for the time of
shifting of slum. The site remains the same half of the land is shifted to the vacant land.

1.2 AIM
 Its in the faith of our country that our country is not only developed by constructing
vertical city, skyscrapers, monuments, etc.
 We should start it from the worst part of our country that us slum where people of our
country face difficulties.
 To provide the people of slum a better life and living standards is our main aim.

1.3 OBJECTIVE
 To help in improving the developing the weaker section of society with an infrastructure
for their good life.
 To help in reducing the disparity in the society.
 To carry out relief and rehabilitation work during natural calamities of floods, drought
famines, epidemics, etc.
 To spread education.
 To help women facing atrocities.
 To save people from cities
 To reduce crime
 To give proper shelter to our people
 To give hygienic environment
 To remove informal settlement and cover it into a planned settlement
 To create a better skyline.
1.4 VALIDITY OF PROJECT
 DDA launched the slum rehabilitation project on his site just to improve the existing site
of the slum. Validity of this site would be life time for the people who are living in the
uncertain conditions till the next master plan comes with the new ideas.

1.5 METHODOLOGY

LOCATION- DDA Jailerwala Bagh Project, Ashok Vihar, Delhi
SITE AREA- 2 Hectares
SITE PRESENT CONDITION
 The site has been allotted to slum rehabilitation. The site opens up on the main national
highway no.1 connecting Punjab to New Delhi.
 This comes under DDA horticulture department
 When slums are dislocated from here then this site is used for various proposed activities

-Primary School
-Secondary School
-Primary Health Centre
-Market Place
-Recreational Spaces

CLIMATE
 It has a humid subtropical climate characterized by a seasonal rhythm: hot summers,
mild winters, unreliable rainfall and great variation in temperature (4°C to 45°C)

OTHER FEATURES

 Topography - The site is polygon in shape and is majorly flat with no level difference and
contours.
 Vegetation – The site is barren land with few bushes.
 Soil – Sandy & clay soil and the land is plain & fertile.
