2018 has been another productive year. Some of

Keep Scotland Beautiful Rural Seaside Award

For the seventh year running, Dunbar’s East Beach won a Rural
Seaside Award. This has caused some derision because the
beach is not always obviously beautiful, but we get the award
because the water quality remains very good and we regularly
litter pick, garden, and generally try to love our beach. We are
proud of the award and grateful to ELC for their support. Mike
Shaw manages the flag pole. Hurrah!

Litter Picking + Beach Cleans

Litter Picking has been handled entirely by Susan
Mowatt and her family again. They have had support
from friends and family and operated beach cleans on
a monthly basis over the summer with equipment
supplied by ELC. They keep an eye on the beach
generally and we owe them a

Kelp Management
The kelp management plan has continued to work relatively
well this year and remains of primary importance to DSHNG
members to prevent smells and fly infestations. Pippa Swan is
the key player on this project. She liaises with ELC and local
contractor, Kevin Thomson, who has been wonderful in
supporting this management plan. Kevin gathers his team and
equipment at short notice and will hit the beach between tides.
In response to heavily negative comment from East Links
residents last year and this, kelp moves are now generally simple
relocations over the sewage interceptor pipe at East Beach.
For the one very serious dump in 2018 that had to be moved off site,
material was transported to Winterfield Golf Club, Phantassie Farm
and Forth Resource Management. Off site removal is costly both in
cash and environment terms and we try to avoid it if possible.

East Beach Regeneration – LIVE TRIAL

Following devastating storms in 2014, the East Beach lost its sand and its very significant
amenity value. A small DSHNG group has been working with ELC and external consultants
since 2015 to develop a live regeneration trial. We have consulted widely and Scottish
Natural Heritage, Scottish Water, SEPA and the Crown Estates are all on board now. We have
had additional advice and support from Glasgow University and with Royal Botanical Garden
Edinburgh on how to ‘green the grey’ of any interventions and ensure that animals are happy.

In 2018, rock armour was placed along

the sewage interceptor pipe. This has
eliminated scouring at the pipe and
slows the rate of flow onto the upper
shore.

Drainage holes in the pipeline have now
been blocked to create a large pool.
This will be monitored to ensure that it
becomes an asset and not a reservoir
for rotting weed.

In 2019, works will commence to reinstate the critical shore section of groyne with a new
concrete ‘biowall’ and timber superstructure and 2 very large breakwaters will be constructed
which will not only protect the sea wall (which collapsed three times in 2018) but will also allow
for the aggregation of any sand that comes our way.

Work will also commence on the design development and delivery of a new promenade and seating area
to ensure that the new sea defences do end up adding to the amenity of this very important part of

Estate Inspections
Now an annual event, volunteers record infrastructure
defects and environmental issues that that we think need
to be addressed by ELC or other statutory authorities. In
2018, the inspection reiterated the need to continue to
work with East Beach and Lamer Street issues and we have
been doing this with ELC.
Works are still required to stabilise dangerous walls in the
area and vacant sites remain an issue.
Thanks to Alasdair Swan, Ian Dane, Kenny Maule, Mike
Shaw, Colin and Teresa Barnes, Millie Cornwall, Brian Cox.

DUNBAR AND EAST LINTON Area Partnership - DELAP

Mike Shaw attends the quarterly Area Partnership Meetings
and DSHNG infrastructure concerns have been raised and
addressed with his help. ELC have actioned maintenance of the
Beach Garden and pathway garden as well as repairs to seating
on Victoria Street and Lamer St. The DSHNG proposals to
upgrade the Coastal Pathway from the harbour to Winterfield
are complete as are road repairs to Lamer St and Shore St.

DSHNG is represented by Mike
Shaw on the Community and Police
Partnership panel. It meets about
once a month and issues affecting
our area ward are actioned by PC
Gavin Ross and/or our Community
Warden, Jimmy Wilson. Jimmy was
a very welcome speaker at one of
our well attended meetings in 2018.

Civic Engagement
v Mike Shaw organised and ran the tombola stall again to help to raise funds on RNLI day. Huge
thanks go to Neil and Janis Adams for assistance in prize gathering and to all the members who
volunteered on what was a really profitable and successful event.

reputation for getting things done. We like to feel that we have the concerns of all of our

neighbours in mind when we start a project or address an issue but are aware that this may not

always be so. Despite reaching out to all 600 homes in our area, we know that we only actively

engage with a relatively small constituency and it remains important to us that people who live in our

area should feel able to approach us with their views, whatever they may be. It will remain our

ambition to make it better beside the sea … for everybody … so do stay in touch!
