BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION

What is Ethics? What is Business Ethics? Why is it important? How is it applicable in our
professional journey? These are the conceptual questions that we will explore in this
class.
Ethics (via Latin ethica)"moral philosophy", from the adjective of ēthos ("custom,
habit"), a major branch of philosophy, is the study of values and customs of a person or
group. It covers the analysis and employment of concepts such as right and wrong, good
and evil, and responsibility. It is divided into three primary areas: meta-ethics (the study
of the concept of ethics), normative ethics (the study of how to determine ethical values),
and applied ethics (the study of the use of ethical values).
Business ethics is a form of the art of applied ethics that examines ethical rules and
principles within a commercial context, the various moral or ethical problems that can
arise in a business setting, and any special duties or obligations that apply to persons who
are engaged in commerce.
Business ethics can be both a normative and a descriptive discipline. As a corporate
practice and a career specialization, the field is primarily normative. In academia
descriptive approaches are also taken. The range and quantity of business ethical issues
reflects the degree to which business is perceived to be at odds with non-economic social
values. Historically, interest in business ethics accelerated dramatically during the 1980s
and 1990s, both within major corporations and within academia. For example, today most
major corporate websites lay emphasis on commitment to promoting non-economic
social values under a variety of headings (e.g. ethics codes, social responsibility charters).
In some cases, corporations have redefined their core values in the light of business
ethical considerations (e.g. BP's "beyond petroleum" environmental tilt).
While dealing with the subject of epistemology of ethics, it would be erroneous to
attribute all too western civilization. Muslim philosophy influenced western thought in
several ways and the most crucial of these influences has been the initiation of humanistic
movements in the west. We will fully cover the western bases of moral philosophy in this
course but our focus will also be on the development of ethical thoughts as they
developed in other parts of the world.
COURSE GOALS
The purpose of the course is to improve your abilities and develop illustrating mature,
reasonable and professional thought. Develop better internal and external relationships
and a spirit of social and professional cooperation this course will help in skills
development, identification and analysis of moral issues. Business ethics focus on
making good decisions rather than the 'right' decision. While dealing with the subject of
business ethics it will be learnt that how to handle moral issues and conflicts while
acquiring moral courage. Acquiring the critical attitude towards business and its
disciplines.
CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR
It is expected that both the stakeholders (teacher and students) adhere to decorum of
professional and ethical conduct. Cheating, plagiarism (submitting the language, ideas,
thought or work of others as one’s own) or otherwise indulging in unfair means to obtain
a grade under false pretenses will result in strong disciplinary action leading to removal
from the course. Any deliverables found falling in such category will result in straight
zero without further re-submission. Participants will act in a professional manner while
attending classes and will adhere to all policies, rules and regulations of LLU.

Course Objectives
Logic is a science of all thinkable states of affairs. However, it is a discipline
without subject matter. It means that it studies the relation among propositions to
discover valid forms of argument. So it improves the capability of reasoning. With
the knowledge of logic students can demarcate valid and fallacious arguments as
well as they become habitual of critical thinking.

Following are the objectives of the course.

1. To improve the reasoning ability of the students.

2. To make students capable to demarcate fallacious and valid arguments.
3. To introduce to students application of logic in administrative sciences.
4. To develop decision making ability based on logical reasoning, which is crucial pre-
requisite for successful managers.
