Closed Sampling System
Closed Sampling System
The purpose of the system is to provide sampling cylinders and their corresponding handling station
for taking samples of a designated process stream by allowing a slipstream of process fluid to pass
through the sample cylinder while the plant is on stream without exposing the operator or environment
to the contents of the process stream.
2. Where indicated, on the UOP Piping and Instrument Diagram as Type A (8-133), the system shall be
the flow-through to process type.
The sample stream is connected to the process inlet connection, flows through the sample cylinder and
is returned to the process via the outlet connection. The inlet and outlet return connections must have
a minimum pressure differential of 0. 0.069 MPag to maintain flow through the sample cylinder. A
third connection on the sampling system provides venting to the relief header.
3. Where indicated on the UOP Piping and Instrument Diagram as Type B (8-134), the system shall be
the flow-through to vent type.
The sample stream is connected to the process inlet connection, flows through the sample cylinder and
is vented to the relief header.
4. a. Each handling station shall have its own valves, independent of the cylinder valves, for controlling
flow, venting, and isolating the system from the process. Valves shown on the UOP Piping and
Instrument Diagram are not included with the sampling system and are required for installation
and emergency shutoff. Connections to the process shall be 3/4 inch NPS.
b. Each station shall have a flexible hose connection for the sample cylinder outlet and a fixed
connection for the sample cylinder inlet. Quick disconnect connections shall be used and shall be
capable of self-sealing with the ability to withstand at least 1.034 MPag internal pressure when
disconnected from the cylinder.
c. The system shall include provisions for flow bypassing of the cylinder and for depressuring the
system before cylinder removal.
d. The system shall include provisions for securely holding the sample cylinder during sampling.
5. The system shall bear a label indicating the maximum allowable operating pressure, which is defined
as the lesser of the equipment rating or the maximum pressure of the installed pressure gauges. Each
unit is also labeled with proper operating instructions.
7. Sample coolers are required when the process material being sampled is at a temperature of 66ºC or
higher.
