Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

A library is a collection of sources of information and similar resources, made

accessible to defined community for reference or borrowing. Learning Resource Center

occupies a very important place in school. It was known as comfortable and quiet place

wherein most of the students can spend their time seeking, studying and gaining

knowledge. It is a place with number of books that were arranged according to cater the

needs of each student with a variety of resources that guide students to academic success.

Learning Resource Center works hard to support and enrich the knowledge of the

students, because they can successfully seek information and ideas for educational

purposes. Library provides wide range of information to help the students for better

understanding of their lesson.

Every school has its own library or learning resource center. There are many

students who love to study and gain knowledge, but sadly most of them nowadays rely to

technology to seek information and references that are sometimes not reliable rather than

on a library. Millennial students are those who study in the front of the computer. They

always search their assignment by the use of computer and internet. Many students today

refer to library as a boring place wherein they inculcate that books are boring as well.

We are now living in the 21st century and we cannot deny the fact that technology

is already part of our lives. Technology plays a big role to the life of every student. No

matter how conducive the library is, for students it is evident that browsing the net to
look for a certain books or topic is a way easier than finding the appropriate book at the

school learning resource center.

Background of the Study

The researchers became interested in pursuing this study because they have

noticed that most of the students nowadays rely on technology rather than textbooks that

can be found inside the library. Their common reason is that going to the library is time

consuming rather than browsing the net to search for a certain topic. Southern Luzon

State University's learning resource center or library stated as a small library with only

few book inside of it. Students do not stay at the library due to its limited number of

books, as a result, most of the students would just refer to surf the net to search for a

lesson or topic. After several years, the school library is now known as a comfortable

place for most number of students. The learning resource center is now a fully-air

conditioned library with huge number of books. However, undeniably, students still

prefer to use technology to look for a topic they want to find because it does not demand

a lot of time. This appear to be a strong belief that no matter how many books a library

can contain, students would always choose something that will make their life easy. Due

to this dilemma, the researchers became interested to create software wherein students

can access the library, through technology, for a better convenience in a way that we can

browse a certain topic or book beforehand. A system that the students can easily reserve a

book to borrow, not because it is an online system, it does not mean that they do not need

to go to the library. The researchers propose this study to make our library more

beneficial to the students in line with technology. This group choses the students and
some faculty of the State University to be the respondents of their study because they

observed that most of them are fond of using technology to search for a lesson or topic.

Objectives

The main objective of this study is to develop and design a program that will

enhance the use and managing of a learning resource.

Specifically, this study aims to accomplish the following:

1. To determine if the Web-based Learning Resource Management System is applicable

in SLSU-Tiaong Campus Library.

2. To know if the system will be helpful to the students of SLSU-Tiaong Campus; and

3. To determine the level of acceptability of the “Web Based Learning Resource

Management System for SLSU-TC Library”

in terms of:

a. Functionality
b. Performance
c. Security
d. System Design

Significance of the Study

The results of this study would be beneficial first, to those students who are using

their school learning resource center. It will help them to access easily to their school

learning resource center in seeking information regarding with their studies. It will

provide them knowledge and information about their school learning resource center.

Second, to those teachers who are also using learning resource. It will also beneficial to

them because they can also easily access to their learning resource center in looking for

the topics they need in their lessons. Third, it will be very helpful to the administrators

because it will provide them easy and more convenient in managing their school learning

resource. They can easily find out the numbers of the students and teachers who accessed

the learning resource center. They can also easily store the data and arrange it accordingly

to cater the needs of their clients. Lastly, to the future researchers because they can use

this study to serve as a source of information to their own research work.

Scope and Limitation

This study is the continuation of the limitation of the study that created last year.

Unlike the previous one, this will deal with the web-based system of a learning resource.

It still contains the same properties such as it can easily look for some resource that are

available inside of the learning resource center, borrowing of a book and monitoring the

attendance of the clients who are engaged in using the learning resource. However, this

time the researchers put some additional features on it like the client can reserve a book

that they need to borrow and, because it is a web-based system, it will be deployed to the

web so the client will see the available resource beforehand because it is already in the

web. The system is only limited to the programmed as well as the software used in the

web based learning resource management system for the university. It is also limited as a
learning resource center system and web pages for the social utilization of the Campus.

The acceptability of this proposes project will cover the perceptions of 30 stratified

randomly selected students and faculty of the University based on the self-made

questionnaires of the researchers given to them.
