INDIVIDUAL INTERACTION

1. (a) Outline THREE aims that parents have for socializing their children. ( 6 marks)

(b) Explain THREE consequences that are likely to occur as a result of poor socialization
practices. ( 6 marks)

(c) Suggest ONE strategy that the primary school may use to assist the family in the socialization
process.

orderly voting on Polling Day.

(b) Give THREE reasons why the democratic style of leadership is usually considered the
best. ( 6 marks)

(c) The new executive committee of a sports club has been elected. Suggest ONE guideline
that may help the committee to lead effectively.

State why that guideline may help. ( 5 marks)

PART I

4. (a) (i) Define the term ‘migrant’. ( 2 marks)

(ii) Identify TWO types of internal migration. ( 2 marks)

(b) State ONE effect of the type of migration you named in (a) (ii). ( 2 marks)

(c) Give THREE reasons why some people may choose NOT to migrate from the
Caribbean. ( 6 marks)

(d) As Chief Immigration Officer, suggest to the government ONE way to regulate
migration.

Why would this way be successful in regulating migrants? ( 5 marks)

5. (a) Name FOUR resources that produce energy for the industries in the Caribbean.
( 4 marks)

(b) Identify TWO sectors in the economy that use the energy from these resources.
( 2 marks)

(c) Give THREE reasons why energy is expensive to produce from the resources available in
the Caribbean. ( 6 marks)

(d) Suggest ONE measure that your government may introduce to help reduce the cost of the
energy to the consumer.

State why this measure will help. ( 5 marks)

PART II

Answer EITHER Question 6 or Question 7.

6. Pollution of coastal waters affects the economy of coastal and island states.

Write an essay on the above topic. In your essay, outline THREE ways in which coastal waters
may become polluted, and explain THREE ways in which coastal water pollution may affect the
economy of a country. Finally, suggest ONE measure that may be used to reduce the level of
coastal pollution. Explain why the measure you suggested will reduce the level of pollution.

7. At least five CARICOM countries spent over 20 per cent of their budget on education in 2002.

Write an essay on the importance of education to Caribbean nations. In your essay, you should
outline THREE educational needs that require the spending of large sums of money. You should
also give THREE reasons for governments’ expansion of the provision for education. Finally,
suggest ONE way in which governments may reduce expenditure without lowering the quality of
education. Explain why your suggestion may reduce expenditure.

OPTIONS

Answer only ONE question from Questions 8 to 10.

CONSUMER AFFAIRS

8. Demand and supply are influenced by a number of factors.

As chairman of a local consumer organization, prepare a talk on the above topic for your members.
First, identify THREE factors that affect the demand for goods and services, and THREE factors
that affect the supply of goods and services. Then, explain how EACH of the demand factors
affects consumers. Finally, suggest ONE way in which the government may make basic items
affordable to consumers. Explain why this way may make items affordable.

COMMUNICATION

9. The Mass Media - The Voice of the Caribbean.

As a local journalist, write a newspaper article in support of linking the Caribbean region through
the mass media. First, outline THREE ways in which these media links may benefit citizens in
Caribbean countries. Then, give THREE reasons why citizens may voice complaints about the
quality of the regional media. Finally, suggest ONE way in which media personnel may help to
improve the quality of the media. Explain why the suggestion you have made will be effective.

TOURISM

10. Tourism is an extremely vulnerable industry.

As Minister of Tourism, prepare an address for a meeting of the Caribbean Tourism Organisation
on the above topic. First, list THREE tourism products offered in the Caribbean. Identify THREE
factors that hinder the development of the tourism industry and explain THREE consequences
of these factors. Finally, suggest ONE measure that CARICOM countries may take to deal with
ONE of the factors you identified. Explain why this measure will be successful.
