TTI Consulting Engineers Pvt. Ltd is a specialist engineering company established in 1990 in Sydney,
Australia to provide professional services in trenchless technology based utility infrastructure
development and renovation works to government and private sector clients in Australia and
neighbouring countries.
During this period, TTI has emerged as a prominent Consultant among the few key international
engineering consultants focused in trenchless technology in particular to provide specialist
engineering services in trenchless pipeline construction and renovation / rehabilitation using
microtunnelling & pipe jacking, horizontal directional drilling, pipe bursting technology, and a host of
trenchless rehabilitation techniques such as CIPP, Close Fit Lining, Slip Lining including Spiral
Wound liners, Segmental lining (GRP), etc.
TTI has been operating in India since 1994.
In addition to the projects involving trenchless technology, TTI has also undertaken, in India, design
& project management assignments in Water Supply, Sewerage and Storm water infrastructure
projects for new and existing townships.
TTI Consulting Engineers (India) Pvt. Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of the parent company was
established in Mumbai in 2005 for exclusive operations in India with parent Company supporting
technically and providing international experience.
Infrastructure Design and Construction Program Management Expertise

TTI, in 2005, setup a Design Centre in Bangalore, with capability to design and project manage
utility infrastructure facilities, Water Supply, Sewerage, Storm Water, Roads, Telecom, Electricity and
GIS related engineering service. TTI, in consortium with other consultants, provided design for Water
Supply, Sewerage, Storm Water, Roads, Electricity, Telecom, Utility services for 15 settlements in
Tripoli region a Govt. of Libya project costing 2 Billion US dollar.

TTI developed GIS based asset and data management expertise as often many clients required us to
provide utility related data in GIS . TTI GIS Wing has engineering staff and facilities to provide

Water and Wastewater Engineering

TTI Design Expertise in Water Infrastructure Works
Some of the projects TTI undertook recently include design consultancy for water and wastewater
infrastructure projects for the Great Socialist People’s Libyan Arab
Jamahiriya. The project aims to provide potable water of appropriate
quality and quantity from the Great Man Made River (GMMR) to all the
residents living in various settlements adjoining Tripoli. The design
included water treatment, storage facilities and distribution network, sewer
network, pumping stations, treatment and disposal and re-use of sewage
and storm water drainage, based on sound environmental practices under
“National Program of Water Supply and Sewerage system for Tripoli
Region” Libya’s Great Man Made
River (GMMR)
The project was done four stages

Stage-4: Final Designs and Preparation of Tender Documents
TTI also undertook a design consultancy project for

Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB). TTI
prepared Detailed Project Report to upgrade and rehabilitate
about 100km of trunk sewers, most of them were laid within
storm water drains. This project was undertaken as part of
BWSSB’s Environmental Action Plan to eliminate sewage
flows in storm water drains. The project is expected to be
funded by JNNURM at a project cost of Rs 1800 Millions
(US$ 45 Million). TTI undertook topographical survey along
about 100km of sewer route , condition assessment of
existing sewers, geotechnical investigation, checking of
hydraulic adequacy and designing of the sewers, designing of
sewers, tender documentation including technical Existing trunk sewer in Drain
specification for trenchless pipe laying, and cost estimation.
TTI Conducted Several other Technical Studies, Investigation and DPRs for BWSSB.
They are:
1 Rs 210 Million worth Bulk Flow Metering and Monitoring System for Bangalore Water
Transmission Network
2 Rs 130 Million worth Rehabilitation and up gradation and of Water Treatment Plant built
under CWSS Stage IV-Phase I project to Augment 100MLD additional capacity.
3 Rs 810 Million worth Rehabilitation and Up gradation of Water Treatment Plant, Pumps
and Pumping Mains of Chama Raja Sagar Water Works built around 1933 (built by Sir M
Vishveshwaraya).
4 Rs 6200 Million worth Replacement and Rehabilitation of Water Distribution Network in
Bangalore and of existing Water Supply Distribution Network

Bulk Flow Metering and Monitoring: TTI prepared DPR for Bulk
Flow Metering and Monitoring System for Bangalore Water
Transmission Network. The aim of this Consultancy work is to
identify strategic locations in the water main system for
installation of metering equipment to monitor flow and enhance
the billing system; the metering will also enable BWSSB to
determine the quantity of unaccounted flow of water and to
implement measures to reduce water losses. By working smart
and adopting state of the art flow metering, monitoring and leak
detection technologies, the BWSSB would be in an advantage
position to reduce the UFW substantially. The DPR was sanctioned
for Funding by JNNRUM for the amount of Rs 210 Millions. Ultrasonic flow Meter
Rehabilitation and Upgradation of BWSSB Water Treatment Plant
TTI prepared DPR for Rehabilitation and Upgradation of Water

Treatment Plant built under Cauvery Water Supply Scheme
(CWSS) Stage IV, Phase I to Augment 100MLD additional
capacity.
The DPR included all civil, mechanical, electrical and

instrumentation works, comprising construction of pump houses,
installation of booster pumps and suction piping works, delivery
manifolds and branch piping, providing pulsator and filters to
enhance the capacity of the existing plant. Provision is also made
for installation of 11 KV power supply from 220 KV station from
the existing 8MVA 66/11 supply and surge vessel for transmission Cascade Aerator
line. The DPR was sanctioned for Funding by JNNRUM for the
amount of Rs 130Millions
Rehabilitation and up gradation and of Water Treatment Plant at TG Halli
TTI has also prepared another DPR for the Rehabilitation of Water
Treatment Plant, Pumps and Pumping Mains of Chamaraja Sagar
water works at TG Halli 30 MGD which was built in 1933 by Sir M
.Vishveshwaraya
The DPR included layout preparation of WTP, construction of

clariflocculators with tube settlers, rehabilitation of existing
clariflocculators, construction of rapid sand filters, construction of
clear water tank, replacement of pumping machineries, disinfection
by UV-light and chlorination, automation of water treatment plant Existing pipe line system
telemetry, replacement of 1000mm dia pumping main for 16kms,
surge suppressors on pumping main etc. The DPR is under process for Funding by JNNRUM for the
amount of Rs 81 Crores

Rehabilitation of existing Water Distribution Network, Bangalore
TTI prepared another DPR for BWSSB

for the Replacement and Rehabilitation
of existing Water Distribution Network.
The DPR included proposal for
replacement of all Cast iron pipes upto
300mm dia and more than 30 years old
by Ductile Pipes, replacement of all
PVC and PSC pipes by DI Pipes,
replacement of service connections and
meters with B Class meters and cost
estimation. The DPR is pending approval was for Funding by JNNRUM for the amount of Rs 620
Crores
Refurbishment of Trunk Sewers and Implementation of Related Works
TTI Currently providing consulting engineering service to Delhi Jal Board to implement Rs 3600
Million worth sewer improvement works. The scope of consultancy services for the sewer
improvement work comprise provision of engineering services for all pre contract activities for six
contracts and post contract project management service for six plus another four contracts already
awarded by Delhi Jal Board. Please refer Project Information Sheet attached to this document for
further details.

Company’s Capability Trenchless Technology

Expertise in Trenchless Engineering

TTI Consulting Engineers have successfully completed several
notable specialist consultancy assignments including services on
some pioneering Australian and overseas projects, for example -
the use of slurry shield microtunnelling technology for the first
time in Sydney on a Sydney Water project; the installation of a
deep sewer (35m) using microtunnelling technology on a
Melbourne Water project; and the World Bank funded
microtunnelling project in India for installation of sewers in
Mumbai(India).

In recent years TTI Consulting Engineers provided engineering
services for three major World Bank funded trenchless engineering projects executed under the
Bombay Sewage Disposal Project in India.
TTI was commissioned as the specialist trenchless technology consultant by the Municipal
Corporation of Greater Mumbai and the World Bank in 1997 for India’s first microtunnelling project
involving installation of 4.7 km of sewers at various locations in Mumbai at a project cost of US$10
million. TTI’s services included feasibility study, planning, design, tender documentation, supervision
and project management of the implementation of the project on behalf of the Client. The project was
successfully completed in 2002.
The second and third projects were sewer rehabilitation projects

involving rehabilitation of about 16 km of old ovoid brick masonry
and RC sewers in the central business district areas of Mumbai. TTI
provided engineering services from inception in 2000 through
project management and completion of the project in 2003.
The projects involved flow diversion, de-silting, CCTV and walk
through surveys (sewer traverses), review of the condition of sewers
nominated for Rehabilition, selection and design of lining systems
Rehabilitated Sewer by GRP for structural enhancement of ovoid brick masonry and RC in
In Mumbai Mumbai, India (at a capital cost of US$ 44 million). TTI sewers
produced pre-qualification and bidding received and prepared bid
evaluation reports and recommendations for award of contracts and successfully project managed the
implementation of the works on behalf of the client.
In recognition of outstanding services provided on these complex Trenchless Technology projects in

Mumbai, TTI was awarded a Gold Award of Excellence for 2004 by the Association of Consulting
Engineers Australia (ACEA).
TTI have recently completed project management services to the

Delhi Jal Board for sewer rehabilitation works worth US$ 15
million. The project comprises three contracts to rehabilitate
several dilapidated RC and brick masonry (circular) sewers of
diameters ranging from 1200mm to 1900mm in Delhi by
trenchless technology. State-of-the-art Cured-In-Place-Pipe
(CIPP) seamless lining process is being used to enhance the
structural capacity of the sewers. This project is the second largest Rehabilitated Sewer by CIPP
sewer rehabilitation project under taken in India. In New Delhi

TTI is thus privileged to have been involved as specialist consultant on India’s largest sewer
rehabilitation projects executed in Mumbai and Delhi respectively. In view of the successful execution
of the abovementioned projects the Delhi Jal Board has engaged TTI for providing design and project
management services for the rehabilitation of approximately 48 kilometers of trunk sewers in Delhi
slated for completion in September 2009.
In March 2005, TTI Consulting Engineers (India) Pvt. Ltd was

appointed by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board
(BWSSB) for the condition assessment, selection of appropriate
technology and rehabilitation/ re-construction of approximately 100
km of trunk sewers of diameters ranging from 450mm to 2000 mm,
and preparing detailed project reports and tender documents. This is
further testimony of the trust clients continue to place in TTI’s
specialist advice in the evaluation and assessment of their sewerage
GRP liners ready for
systems and providing the state-of-the-art solutions for the renewal /
Installation in Mumbai rehabilitation of underground assets.
TTI Consulting Engineers has also been involved in a number of sewer rehabilitation programmes in
Australia, involving walk through inspections (traverses), CCTV surveys, condition assessment,
structural analysis and rehabilitation of more than 100km of sewers, using a variety of sewer
rehabilitation products and processes.
In view of its unique pool of expertise, Sewer Assessment Specialists – TTI Consulting Engineers
were selected to provide specialist engineering services by Sydney Water Corporation (SWC) for 1)
Rehabilitation of Sewers 2) Rehabilitation of structures and 3) Structural Analysis and Condition
assessment of SWC’s assets on an outsourcing term contract agreement initially for a period of 2 years
(with an option to extend for a further 2 years).
This is a prestigious assignment won in the face of stiff competition from all major international
consulting groups active in Sydney. The services include providing
technical assistance and advice in the development standards and
specifications, assessment of rehabilitation systems, the development
and introduction of new repair technologies, evaluation of tenders and
the establishment of the prequalification systems for various
technologies and construction support.
The project team is performing a key technical role in the

rehabilitation of sewers ranging from 150mm service lines to the Rehabilitated Sewer by GRP
largest trunk mains of the Sydney’s NSOOS and SWOOS systems. in New Delhi, India
The services also include undertaking highly challenging confined inspections of sewers in SWC’s
700 km traversable trunk system (upto 60 to 70 km annually). For this work TTI has deployed a group
of specialists who have in depth knowledge of SWC’s infrastructure and ongoing rehabilitation
program which started in the early 1990’s.

Through its assignments on a wide range of projects

over a number of years both in Australia as well as
overseas, TTI has amassed significant specialist
expertise in state-of- the-art no-dig technologies
rehabilitation materials and systems. TTI staff have
kept abreast with the R&D activities in the area as
well as obtained useful first hand feedback from the
experience of utility managers and engineers on the
performance of both old and new systems through
active participation in international conferences and

In acknowledgement of TTI Consulting Engineers pre-eminent position on the

Jacking of 1600 mm forefront of this rapidly evolving field the Australasian Society for Trenchless
dia sewer pipe in Technology and the Main Roads Authority of Western Australia has
Melbourne commissioned TTI to develop a framework for Trenchless Technology
Guidelines, Standards and Specifications for use throughout Australia and New
Zealand. TTI has conducted in-depth feedback consultations/surveys of the trenchless technology
industry internationally, a literature search of all guidelines/standards/specifications currently in use

In 2002, TTI formed a joint venture company with the Switzerland based underground engineering
major, Amberg Engineering Ltd. The objective of this JV is to provide engineering consultancy and
project management services for large and complex engineering projects in the South-East Asian

trenchless installation and rehabilitation of pipelines of all diameters in any type of soil.

Project Brief
TTI Consulting Engineers were the pioneering consultants to introduce
Slurry Shield microtunnelling in Sydney, Australia in 1995. As a turnkey
consultant, TTI designed and executed in association with Nissho Iwai
Corporation Ltd, Australia the first microtunnelling project involving the
installation of a sewer through cobble stones. It used Iseki’s super Uncle-
mole to excavate cobble stones of strength in excess of 200Mpa.

Microtunnelling and Pipejacking Method Australia
Project Brief
TTI designed and implemented the world’s deepest
microtunnelling project to replace a 1500mm dia
dilapidated sewer in Melbourne, Australia in 1995.
TTI provided the technical expertise to this unique project to install
sewer at a depth of 35 by microtunnelling and pipejacking
technology to Nissho Iwai Corporation Ltd, Australia. The
1500mm dia and 135m long sewer was installed through very
dense silty sand clayey soils TTI successfully executed two more
microtunnelling projects in Melbourne Australia. A unique
technique involving a narrow 2700mm dia working shafts with
enlarged base ( as shown in the figure) to facilitated the jacking of

Project Brief
TTI provided engineering service to the Municipal Corporation of Greater
Mumbai for this World Bank financed first microtunnelling project from
inception through successful implementation. The objective of this project was
to install all missing vital sewers links, most across Indian Railway Tracks and
busy roads where conventional methods could not be used..
TTI prepared pre qualification and bidding documents for the project as per the
World Bank guidelines and also drafted a dedicated technical specification for
microtunnelling work for the approval of the Bank. TTI also provided project
management services to the client for this first microtunnelling project executed
in India and conducted training on the finer aspect of microtunnelling to the staff

Iron (CI) pipes (upto 300mm dia) over 30yrs of life and all
sizes of PSC and PVC pipes laid in different division of
Bangalore are identified, along with main problems immediate
replacement/rehabilitation to minimise water losses, to
improve tapping pressure in pipelines and to improve the
quality of water supply. Thus, it will not only arrest UFW
water losses, but also enable BWSSB to recover proper
revenue from the consumers. This aspect has been brought
out & highlighted by various technical studies.

In order to assess the water losses, the
entire network had to be identified and
database prepared to assess the problems
in distribution. This study would then
enable the remodeling of the system in the
future. As a measure of assessing the water
loss at macro-scale, IISc has planned to Flow measurement in field using
have the entire network in GIS database. Ultrasonic Flow meter

Project Brief
The Public Utility Board (PUB) is implementing a NEWater Infrastructure

Plan (NIP) to augment the supply of NEWater to various zones across
Singapore. The project includes an 84 Km long transmission main net-
work, service reservoir, chemical dosing facilities etc.
The NEWater transmission main consists of large carbon steel pipes of
diameters varying from 2200mm to 900mm.
CH2MHILL is the Design Consultant for the NEWater project. CH2MHILL
appointed TTI as their sub-consultants to design the pipeline profiles and
develop tender drawings.
The scope of work for TTI included

Plan and Profile
¾ Collation of preliminary layout drawings prepared by CH2MHILL
for the approved route.
¾ Collation of standard drawings prepared by CH2MHILL
¾ Discuss and agree with CH2MHILL the design criteria and

standards to be adopted and obtain a duly endorsed design

¾ Based on the above documents, design criteria and the design

Mr Umesh Babu is a Civil Engineer with Master of Engineering Degree in Environmental

Engineering. He has about 12 years of experience in various facets of environmental consulting, GIS,
Water and Wastewater treatment plants design and sewerage system design and network analysis using
Sewer CAD.
Umesh Babu is the Group Leader for Strom Water Projects and also is the Project Manager for Libya
Project.
He is conversant with various engineering software’s, viz SewerCAD, WaterCAD, StormCAD,

Bently-Haested Methods, USA. He has carried out several training programme and presentations on
SewerCAD, the Sanitary Sewer Modeling Software.
His work and experience over the last nine years, has been mainly focused on the areas of design of

He has experience in planning, design and detailed engineering of pumping stations, sewage treatment

He is conversant with various GIS and 3D modeling Software’s, viz ArcGIS 9.0, Autocadmap 2004,
Mapinfo, Microstation Power Draft XM Edition, Microstation 95, Arcview, Auotcad 2000i, and CC

His work experience and in past six years is mainly focused on GIS, 3D modeling and working on
survey related data with site verifications.
Harish is presently the Manager (GIS/BD).

7.Mr. B.K Anand
Mr. B.K Anand holds a Post-Graduate degree in Water Resources Engineering from UVCE,
Bangalore University. He has 4 years of work experience in Research and Teaching in International
and National Institutes.
His work experience over the last three years is on water resources engineering involving River basins
Modeling and water resources assessment for major Peninsular river basins
of India using hydrological models.
He worked with International Water Management Institute (IWMI), New Delhi in Strategic Analysis
of National River Linking Project of India. Prior to this, he was a Lecturer in National Institute of
Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, in Civil Engineering Department.
He is conversant with Various GIS and statistical Packages such as ArcView, ERDAS,
SURFER,STATA and SPSS.
He has 5 research papers published in International and National Journals and is

co-author of the book Elixir of Life: the Socio-ecological governance of drinking water.
He was Involved in preparation of preliminary and detail design of water supply networks for 6
municipal towns in Libya and Involved in the preparation of profiles for the Newater transmission
main for the NIP Project-Singapore.
8.Ms.Rajeshwari Harapanahalli
Ms. Rajeshwari holds a Post-Graduate degree in Environmental Engineering from VTU, Belgaum,
Karnataka. She has 2 years of relevant experience in Water & Wastewater, Air and Solid Waste
Management.
Her work experience mainly focuses on designing and performance evaluation of Decentralized
Wastewater Treatment units (DEWATS), Membrane Technologies (like Reverse Osmosis, Membrane
Bioreactors, Nano-filters etc) and solid waste disposal methodologies (biogas reactors, compost pits,
landfills etc). She has also carried out in-depth industrial and water resource monitoring in southern
states under the directives of Supreme Court and MoEF.
She is conversant with SEWER CAD Bently-Heasted Methods, USA. She has presented and
published technical papers on TDS removal methodologies and E-waste management.
She had worked on Libya project involving designing of sewerage system and Bill of Quantities.

Brief descriptions of some of TTI’s key staff who have relevant qualifications, skills and experience
are given below as an indication of the expertise that can be drawn upon.
1.Mr. Bala k. Balasubramaniam
Bala has 32 years of experience which includes 20 in the area of trenchless technology. He is
regarded as one of the key international experts in trenchless technology, in particular
microtunnelling and sewer rehabilitation works. Bala has direct experience in the application of
advanced tunnelling machines such as Slurry Shield and Earth Pressure Balance Shield and also
other micro tunnelling systems such as Iseki, Horizonger, Ironmole and Earth Arrow for installing
sewers and outfalls. He has been associated with over 50km of sewer installation works by
microtunnelling technology.
In addition, Bala has has directly provided inputs as Principal Consultant on several trenchless sewer
construction and rehabilitation projects worth over A$ 80 million in Australia and overseas. He has
hands-on experience in the use of many trenchless sewer rehabilitation products such as PVC, HDPE
and GRP for small and man-entry size sewers, chemical grouting to seal joints and leakages in sewer
collection systems, and renovation of sewers using pipe-bursting technology. Bala’s specialist
expertise in trenchless technology derives from several microtunnelling and trenchless sewer
rehabilitation projects executed by TTI in Sydney and Melbourne, and, projects funded by the World
Bank in Mumbai involving a number of trenchless techniques including enlargement of ovoid brick
sewers using reaming technology. His involvement on the Mumbai projects has included drafting of
project specific technical specifications for microtunnelling works in the World Bank Standard
Bidding Document format for the first microtunnelling project in India, and for trenchless sewer
rehabilitation work for a major sewer rehabilitation project financed by the World Bank to
rehabilitate 20km of ovoid brick sewers in Mumbai using trenchless lining and pipe-bursting
technologies.
Over the years (1996 to 2000) Bala has delivered numerous lectures on Trenchless Technology
applications to Civil Engineering undergraduate students at the University of Sydney. He has also
conducted trenchless technology seminars for senior government officials, consultants and
contractors in Delhi at the invitation of the World Bank. Bala has published more than 15 technical
papers on trenchless technology at various international and national trenchless technology
conferences. He was the appointed advisor to the Trenchless Technology Committee of the
Government of India by the World Health Organization and edited the National Guidelines for
Trenchless Technology in India in 1996. With extensive exposure to the Trenchless Technology
industry both nationally and internationally and detailed involvement in its application on major
projects, Bala brings unique technical capabilities to the study team.
2.Mr. Jacob George
Jacob is a civil engineer with over 25 years of experience in engineering and project management of
water, wastewater & drainage infrastructure projects with major international consulting firms. The
main focus of his experience has been the provision of engineering services for the design and
construction of water, wastewater and storm drainage facilities on urban development projects
working to international standards and practices. These have included managing multi-disciplined
teams for the design & delivery of projects comprising sewage treatment facilities, sewage collection
systems, pumping stations, rehabilitation of sewers and pumping mains in Australia, Brunei,
Malaysia, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and India. In recent years Jacob has been involved in TTI’s the
trenchless technology and conduit rehabilitation/renovation projects in Australia and in India
providing key project management and technical inputs.
As Director, Projects & Development of TTI, he provides head office project direction and
technical/administrative/logistical support for the firm’s Australian and overseas specialist
engineering activities. In previous roles he has managed consultancy operations in Brunei as Country
Manager for Binnie & Partners (UK), been General Manager for Black & Veatch Consulting Ltd
(USA) and has held design and project engineering responsibilities for Metcalf & Eddy (USA) for
their environmental infrastructure related activities in India and the Middle-East. He brings diverse
engineering, operational and commercial experience and provides engineering inputs/reviews and
project management support to the project teams.
3.Mr. Lance J. Horlyck
Lance is a sewer assessment and rehabilitation specialist with a structural engineering background
with over 25 years of experience. His particular interest is in the area of pipe rehabilitation of sewer
assets covering the full size range from house service lines to the largest box shaped trunk sewers.
Mr. Horlyck has considerable experience in providing technical advice on the assessment and design
of various trenchless systems including the development of standards and specifications. He was
responsible for developing a suite of specifications used by Sydney Water for trenchless sewer
rehabilitation that have also been used by other authorities in Australia. His speciality areas include
trenchless technology and rehabilitation and protection of sewers and concrete structures. He has
been instrumental in establishing standards and procedures for the condition assessment and
rehabilitation of Sydney Water’s sewer system. Over the last 10 years he has traversed in the order
of 400 km of sewers and performed over 200 confined spaces inspections. He has conducted
confined spaces inspection and condition assessment of major trunk sewer systems in Sydney and
Canberra and developed specifications and standards for internal rehabilitation of major trunk sewer
networks in Australia, New Zealand and India.
Lance is also involved in research and development of new products for rehabilitation of concrete
sewers subject to hydrogen sulphide attack. He is an active member of the Australian Society for
Trenchless Technology and has written many technical papers in the area over the last 10 years and
chaired technical committees for international NoDig conferences.
4.Mr. Robert G. Cadden
Bob is a sewer rehabilitation and asset management specialist with over 40 years of working
experience in Sydney Water in all facets of the Water Industry. During this time Bob has developed
internationally recognized skills and expertise in conduit system management and is now applying
this to assist clients. In 1990 Bob was assigned to Sydney Water’s Clean Waterways Programme as
the sewer conduit system operations expert. In his planning role Bob was responsible for the
development of the planning process for holistic sewer system upgrading methodologies which are
used today by Sydney Water internally and Australian Water Technologies externally throughout
Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia. With this broad range of skills and expertise, Mr.
Cadden brings a unique capability in assessing and evaluating conduit assets particularly in the area
of maintaining or improving client’s capability to meet service demands today and into the future.
Mr. Cadden served as a member of the manual committee responsible for preparation of Australian
Sewer Conduit Condition Evaluation Manual in 1991.
5.Mr. Max Brand
Max has over 35 years experience as a structural engineer working on civil infrastructure projects in
the water sector. He worked for over 10 years as a design manager of the structural group at GHD.
In recent years he has prepared contract documents and carried out the design management for a
number of major Sydney Water sewer and water rehabilitation projects including the $65m
rehabilitation of the Lower SWSOOS one of Sydney’s largest trunk sewer systems.
6.Mr. Michael McGill
Mick has over 40 years experience in infrastructure development. For 13 years he was employed in
Sydney Water in their infrastructure development group at General Manager level. During this
period, Mick was involved in the introduction of Trenchless Technology and its development in
Sydney Water. The capital works program over a number of years under Mick’s control was of the
order of $150 million per annum. Mick was directly involved in setting up the initial project team
which ran Sydney Water’s program for minimizing the effect of infiltration on SW sewers. This
program developed into the Sewerfix Program which is now one of the largest sewer rehabilitation
and trenchless engineering projects in Australia. While with Sydney Water the groups managed by
Mick pioneered the extensive use of horizontal drilling techniques in the Blue Mountains for the
provision of back-log sewerage, and the use of pipe bursting technology for renewal of deteriorated
water mains by entering into a joint venture with Collex No Dig Pty Ltd which ran for a number of
years with highly successful outcomes. More recently Mick also worked with AJ Lucas one of
Australia’s pre-eminent HDD contractors.
7.Mr. Aaron Liu
Aaron is a structural engineer with over 20 years experience in a wide range of water and sewerage
infrastructure. Over the last 10 years he has provided structural engineering advice to Sydney Water
on their buildings, reservoirs, aqueducts, major trunk sewers and pumping stations. He has been
involved in the Sydney Waters NSOOS and SWOOS Risk Reduction Program involving inspection,
assessment, design and documentation of remedial measures for two large trunk sewer systems and
providing tender assessment and construction support. His particular area of expertise include audits
and condition reviews, condition assessment of existing structures, heritage structures and
rehabilitation of major concrete structures and aqueducts.
8.Mr. Bernard Shuen
Bernard is a structural specialist with over 20 years experience in a wide range of engineering
structures. His particular area of expertise is in finite element modeling and structural analysis,
heritage structures and structural review and verification. He provides specialist engineering advice
on structural analysis and condition assessment of water/sewage pipes/ sewerage structures and
detailed structural review and quality assurance checks of new and existing infrastructure.
