*Hepatitis B Surface antigen (HBsAg) 0.49 S/Co < 1.00 : Negative ELISA
> 1.00 : Positive
Comments:
HBsAg appears one to ten weeks (commonly 4 weeks after exposure to Hepatitis B Virus. It persists during acute illness and disappears 12-20 weeks after the onset of symptoms.
Antigenic persistence beyond 6 months indicates a chronic illness or carrier state.
A negative result indicates that the tested sample does not contain detectable HBsAg. However, if HBsAg could not be detected due to very low titre, such a result does not preclude the possibility of exposure to an
infection by the HBV.
A false positive result may occur due to presence of certain other cross reactive antigens or rarely with elevated levels of Rheumatoid factor.
