Standard 3.

1 Classroom Management & Collaborative Learning

Candidate model and facilitate effective classroom management and collaborative learning strategies to
maximize teacher and student use of digital tools and resources.

This artifact, the Engaged Learning Project, was a project embedded into a 4 week study of
African geography in a 7th grade classroom. This project designed to meet high levels of engagement in
the classroom. Technology integration was measured using the Levels of Teaching Innovation (LoTi)
scale. This artifact was designed to provide research opportunities for the students while providing them
an opportunity to make connections with experts outside of the classroom to prepare them for a mock
Model UN session. This artifact describes the timeframe for the projects, how students will gather and
share their research, which content standards will be achieved through completion, how technology will
effectively be integrated into the classroom, and the final product. The project is intended to
demonstrate the importance and the connections that the students and their community have with
their content.

This Engaged Learners project demonstrates the ability to model and facilitate effective
classroom management strategies by keeping students engaged and providing authentic learning
experiences for the students. Additionally, the project connects students with their community and their
life outside of the classroom. Using Just-in-time instructional strategies and tools (Microsoft OneNote,
Teams, and Flipgrid), and providing students with the ability to demonstrate their understanding and
mastery in a variety of ways allows students to stay engaged, effectively managing a classroom of
diverse learners. Throughout this lesson, students effectively led their own study and learning of the
material. Using Microsoft OneNote, Teams, and Flipgrid, the teacher effectively addressed students
needs and issues in a timely manner, further demonstrating the ability to model and facilitate
collaborative learning using these online learning tools. Flipgrid provides a platform for students to
share ideas, receive and provide feedback, and support learning of all students in the classroom. This
tool is an effective tool that can easily and effectively support collaborative learning in the classroom.

While completing this project I was reminded of the struggle that preparing major projects can
be! It has been several years since I have needed to write a lesson plan, and this was a great reminder of
how much work it takes to effectively prepare an activity or lesson that can be effective for all of the
learners in a classroom. If I were to complete this project again, I would not try to include so many
different moving parts. As we completed this project, we found that it was difficult to get students to
effectively ask questions of their family members about their family history. If I were to use this activity
again, I would provide students with a template to help guide these family history interviews. We found
the same about the interviews of the local experts. I would also want to provide the students with a
template for interviewing the experts. I think all of these parts were valuable and added value to the
final product, however, it was such a struggle for students that it detracted from the purpose of the
project.

This project impacted faculty development and student learning. This project was shared with
the seventh grade teachers at Elkins Point and was implemented in each section of every seventh grade
geography course. Furthermore, the interviews that the students completed with their family members
and local experts have been stored in the schools video channel for teachers and students to use in the
future. This project impacted faculty development by demonstrating how technology can increase
student engagement with content and with authentic learning opportunities. Several teachers have
asked for help planning and implementing Skype sessions with experts in their classroom. The number
of teachers and students using Flipgrid and Padlet continue to increase with each new instance of its use
in the classroom. While students are familiar with traditional research techniques (media center and
web research), using personal interviews for research was a new technique. The impact of the project
can be seen through the increased use of Skype to bring experts into the classroom as well as the
increased use of Flipgrid amongst seventh grade social studies teachers to provide reflection
opportunities for their students.
