SPECIAL TEAMS

Dots Coverage Drill

- Position eight dots equidistant apart 10 yards downfield from the punt line of scrimmage, with the gunners
aligned at their regular locations and facing two defenders each in a double press.
- Position the players on a dot, according to their coverage responsibility, at the 10-yard line with the return men
standing at a regular depth to receive and return each punt.
- On the coach’s signal from 10 yards in front of the coverage players, have the ball snapped to the punter, who
punts the ball.
- As the ball goes over the coach’s head, have him point to the right, left or both sides of coverage players to
cover the punt. The coverage players get off of the blocks of the hold-up people and cover to the ball.
- Continue the drill until the returner is corralled or tagged.
- Key coaching point: Have the return men work on their change-of-direction for the coverage players to make
the play.

Pivot, Drop and Block Drill

- Have four players 10 yards apart on a line of scrimmage, with partners facing them approximately 20 yards
downfield to serve as coverage players.
- With a return man awaiting the punt at his regular distance, have the return men, on a signal, pivot their hips
and drop off the line of scrimmage, glancing at the punter to check for a fake first.
- After the ball is punted, have the return players turn and drop toward the return man, at which point the four
downfield players cover the punt to the ball.
- Have the punt return players acquire their blocks after taking their angle to the punt, occupying them for
approximately two seconds.
- Key coaching point: Have the return man field the ball and return through traffic until he is tagged.

Scattered Timing Drill

- Stack two or more members of the kickoff team together, one behind the other, into two groups, with the group
on the right side mirroring the left.
- On the coach’s signal, as the kicker takes his regular approach steps, have the group on the right approach the
line, with the objective of being on or just behind the line of scrimmage as the kicker swings through the ball.
- Have the group run through the line and sprint 10 yards downfield, before decelerating and returning to its line.
- Key coaching point: Once the first group has completed a repetition of the drill, have the other group perform
the drill and continue the drill until all players are consistently hitting the line at full speed and are within a
yard of it when the ball is kicked.

Drop Angle Drill

- Align five players along a line, with another five players positioned five yards in front of the other players, with
their backs to them.
- On the coach’s signal whether the return is right or left, the first player in the front line drop at an angle. When
he passes the second-line player nearest him, that player begins to run downfield in coverage mode.
- Have the frontline player confront his block and either wall him off or take him across the field.
- Key coaching point: Continue the drill until each player in the front line has completed both right and left
drops.

Flat Back Drill

- Place a 5- or 10-pound weight plate on the lower back of a long snapper, who is positioned over the ball in a
good snapping position.
- After warming up, have the snapper perform six to 10 snaps consecutively, while attempting to keep the
weighted object from falling off to either side or sliding down his back end.
- If the weighted object does not remain on his back as he snaps, be aware that where it falls can provide an
indication of the source of the problem. If it falls off to the right or left, the snapper is too dominant to that
side. If the object falls off behind him, the snapper is either too high on his follow-through or is raising his
head early.
- Key coaching point: Emphasize that the primary objective of the drill is to improve the body positioning of the
long snapper.

Speed Rotation Drill

- Have the holder get into his ideal position, aligned with his tee or a spot on the ground, with the coach
kneeling an arm’s length in front of him.
- Have the holder go through a mock check-off with the kicker, then look to the center and call for the ball.
- With the ball hidden behind the coach’s back in one hand, have the coach bring the ball up to the hand of the
holder, who takes the ball from him and spots it, rotating the laces when necessary.
- Key coaching point: After the ball has been placed by the holder, have him return it to the coach, who can
realign the laces to challenge the holder or execute the drill in a rapid-fire manner, continuously giving the ball
back to the holder once the spot is reset.
