After SLE
1. What impact did this experience make on your life?
The reason I chose to do my volunteer hours in a hospital was to explore possible
career paths for my future. This experience did just that for me and helped me to
release that I don’t want to sit at a desk all day, instead I want to be interacting with
the patients and those who need help. This experience helped me to decide my
future career and what I was going to study at school.
2. How did you solve problems that came up?
Some of the problems that came up while I was volunteering was time management
and dealing with upset patients. Because I had a job and I was taking two summer
classes at the same time I was trying to do my service hours, time management
became a big issue for me. I had to figure out a schedule and a way to get to
everywhere I needed to be while still having time to complete my homework on
time. When patients would get upset at me or my nurse assistant, the easiest thing to
do would be to try and cheer them up by talking them through it or calling for
assistance. Experiencing the less pleasant aspects of the hospital proved that this
type of job isn’t the easiest and taught me that I really needed to consider if this was
what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
3. What will you take away from this experience that will help you in the future?
This experience taught me loads of things like how to have patience, keep my time
well managed, and help those that don’t feel too good, feel even a tiny bit better.
Being at the hospital was an amazing once in a lifetime experience and I’m very
happy I was able to experience it when I did. I’m was so pleased with my experience
there the first time that I decided to go back there this summer.
