Time and tide wait for no man. This is so true. The days are ticking over
at a very rapid rate and before we realize, the Conference will be upon
us. On our side we have been working towards the successful conduct
of the Conference and to ensure that every delegate and participant

Greetings!
I extend heartily welcome to all the members of Association of Physicians of India (API),
post graduates and delegates to Kochi, Kerala “God’s Own Country” for APICON 2019.
API was formed in 1944 with an objective to encourage advance medical knowledge and
promote research in the field of medicine. Over the years, API’s central responsibility has
increased to advising, recommending and ferming laws affecting the practice of medicine,
preparing guidelines for various diseases in Indian context, medical education, health
Dr. PRITAM GUPTA practice and healthcare initiatives. It also prescribes standards of professional conduct for
PRESIDENT API all healthcare practitioners. In 2015, API set up a research wing “Physician Research
Foundation” to promote research in medical science in our country.
API is committed to update the knowledge of doctors so that the healthcare of community
should improve at a faster rate. In order to give all its members a chance to present their
research material and update their knowledge. API conducts an annual conference,
APICON. APICON is also an opportunity to recognise and honour the members of the API
community and present them with awards, prizes, medals and certificates of merit.
This year, API is hosting its 74th APICON, and we are pleased that it will be held in Kochi,
Kerala. Kochi is formerly known as Cochin, and is also known as “The Queen of the Arabian
Sea”, “The industrial Capital of Kerala” & “The smartest City in Kerala”. The conference is led
by Dr.K.K.Pareek, President-Elect and Chairman Scientific Committee of APICON 2019 and
Dr.G.Narsimullu, Dean ICP, Chairman of CME APICON 2019. The organising committee with
Dr.Sreenivas Kamath at the helm as organising secretary along with his team mates is also
working hard day and night to provide us with a memorable infrastructure for the
conference.
I am privileged to invite and welcome all the physicians, doctors & post graduate residents
to join the scientific deliberations at APICON 2019, which will be held from 7th to 10th
February 2019 at Lulu Bolgatty International Convention Centre, Kochi, Kerala.
The need of the hour for every practising doctor is to have a sound knowledge and stay
abreast of the latest updates and developments in the field of medicine. It is imperative to

Greetings from Hon. General Secretary, API, Mumbai!

It is a great pleasure and honor to welcome you all to the 74th Annual Conference of Association
of Physicians of India “APICON-2019” to be held at Lulu Bolygatty International Convention
Center, Kochi from7thto 10th Feb 2019.

Association of Physicians of India was formed in 1944 i.e. 74 yrs. back with main aim of
encouraging and advancing the knowledge; and promoting research in Medicine.
DR. MANGESH TIWASKAR
HON. GENERAL SECRETARY API regularly presents Awards, Prizes, Medals and other Certificates for various deserving
members. Rules prescribing standards of professional conduct are also formed by the API.

API also suggests and advises framing of laws affecting practice of Medicine, Medical Education,
Health practices and health care activities. API had its own city branches and State Chapters in
different areas.

On behalf of the Association of Physicians of India, I welcome you all to this Kochi city. The city
Kochi is also famousfor “Largest Man Made Island in India” I am sure all of us will be blessed with
knowledge of advances in the field of Medicine. These are very objectives of API.

The Association also cooperates with other associations to promote the objectives of API.

Journal of API i.e. JAPI is a prime monthly publication which it’s indexed. Journal of the
Association of Physicians is an important activity of API, which binds and keeps of its members
with regular appraisal of all the activities of API. JAPI is also an important platform for the
publication of research activities of API Members. From time to time Special issues of interest
are published by JAPI.

API Textbook of Medicine is another important publication of API which is read all across the
country and it is accepted as a standard textbook of medicine. Already we have ten editions of
API Textbook published and in near future we will have the 11th edition.

Physicians Research Foundation will give considerable thrust to the research in the field of
medicine in the country and also a lead in establishing standards and guidelines to health –
related issues of the Indian ethnicity and promote health care delivery and improve the
standards of patient care.

API hosts it own website which is accessed by all members, keeping up to date regarding various
activities of API.

As the Hon. General Secretary I invite members to give constructive suggestions to improve the
activities of our esteemed organization.

The Organizing Secretary Dr. Sreenivasa Kamath and his team are workingunbreakable day and
night to provide all necessary facilities, good infrastructure and excellent hospitality at the venue
to make it a grand success APICON 2019.

I invite all physicians, practitioner and the post graduate students to attend and participate in

ABOUT API KOCHI

Kochi has many titles to its credit. “The Queen of the Arabian Sea”, “The
industrial Capital of Kerala”. “The smartest City in Kerala”, etc., But it can also
boast of being in the forefront of health care with medical colleges, a
well-equipped modern Government Hospital and number of world class
private hospitals. It is not surprising that the Association of Physicians of
India has its only city branch in Kochi, in the state of Kerala.

API Kochi Branch came into existence in 2008 when a group of

well-meaning physicians got together for APICON 2008. The ground work
was done with Dr. Shyamala Menon and Dr.GeethaPhilips at the helm of
affairs.

Within a short time span of 9 years, the Association has grown from
strength to strength. At present, it has around 250 members. Talks by
eminent doctors, case discussions and panel discussions are held on the last
Friday of every month. API DIAS series along with other city branches in
India, State API conferences, International Diabetic updates organized by
RSSDI every year – these are some of the events hosted by Kochi, with the
members of the Kochi Branch playing a very active role.

Now this 9 year old branch has taken upon itself the mammoth task of
hosting the mega event, APICON in 2019. We are sure that with everybody’s
blessings & support, we will be able to make it a memorable one.

Dear Colleagues,
API Kochi branch welcome you all with a big "Namaskaram".
As the Chairman and Secretary of API Cochin branch, we welcome you all to “God’s own
country” once again. After 2008, Kochi is hosting APICON after a gap of 11 yrs. It will be
rewarding experience for you academically psychologically and culturally.
Kerala historically known as Keralam, is an Indian state in South India on the Malabar coast. It
is formed on 1 November 1956 following the state reorganisation act by combining malayalam
speaking regions. It is bordered by Karnataka to the north and north east. Tamil nadu to the
east and south, and the Lakshadweep sea to the west. With 33,387,677 inhabitants as per the
2011 census, Kerala is the thirteenth largest indian state by population. It is divided into 14
districts with the capital and the largest city being Thiruvanthapuram. Malayalam is the most
widely spoken language and is also the official language of the state.
Flanked by the Arabian sea in the west, the towering western ghats in the east and networked
by 44 interconnected rivers, Kerala is blessed with a unique set of geographical features that
have made it one of the most sought after tourist destinations in Asia. A long shoreline with
serene beaches, tranquil stretches of emerald backwaters, lush hill stations and exotic wildlife,
are just a few of the wonders that await you once you crossover to the other side. And what’s
more, each of these charming destinations is only few hour drive from the other- a singular
advantage no other place on the planet can offer.
Kerala prides itself for being the flag bearer for not just how a culture can respect its past but
also march foreward with growth & progress as well. Hundred percent literacy, world-class
health care systems, India’s lowest infant mortality and highest life expectancy rates are
among a few of the milestones that the people of the state are extremely proud of.
APICON 2008 had a very good gathering, we wish even more this time to give you all a
wonderful, joyful, memorable time in Kochi.

COCHIN - Where to Go ?..... What to See ?.....

“Cochin” is a vibrant city situated on the south-west coast of the Indian peninsula, in the breathtakingly scenic
and prosperous state of Kerala, dubbed “God’s Own Country”. It has a fine natural harbour, which gives it the
status of ‘The Queen of the Arabian Sea’. Informally, Kochi is also referred to as the Gateway to Kerala.

Heritage Cochin
Visit the older parts of Cochin, Fort Cochin and Mattancherry which is one of the oldest British Colony. Themain
attractions are Chinese fishing nets, St.Francis Church, Jewish Synagogue, Dutch Palace and Jew Street.

Chinese Fishing Nets, Fort Kochi (6 kms from venue)

The Chinese fishing nets (Cheenavala) are distinctly unique to Kochi. It is believed
that traders from the court of the Chinese ruler Kublai Khan introduced these nets
here. Oddly, these nets are found only in Kochi, outside China! Many fishermen
earn their livelihood by fishing using these massive nets. A whole stretch of the
coast along Fort Kochi and Vypeen are dotted with these nets.

St. Francis Church, Fort Kochi (6 kms from venue)

It is the oldest church built by Europeans in India. On his 3rd visit to Kerala, Vasco
da Gama, the Portuguese trader who reached India from Europe by sea, fell ill and
died in Kochi. He was buried in the St. Francis Church. Later his remains were taken
back to Portugal. In spite of that, his burial spot inside the church has been clearly
marked out.

Jew Street and Jewish Synagogue (14 kms from venue)

It’s almost a walk down the lanes of antiquity. The Jew Street is lined with shops
that sell curios, antique pieces of crockery, carved wooden furniture, bronze and
brass sculptures, remnants of traditional houses and jewellery. The antique sellers
of these streets are the descendants of a fast dwindling population of Jews who
settled down here in AD 52. Every piece that they sell has its own tale to narrate –
of a palace or a home of the nobility, of travels across many lands and ages.

Hill Palace, Thripunithura (16 kms from venue)

Built in the 19th century by the Raja of Kochi, this palace served as the seat of the
Raja of the Kochi province. The palace has been converted into a museum
displaying a fine collection of articles showing the wealth and splendour of the
Rajas of Kochi, including the thon and the crown. The museum also houses a large
collection of archaeological findings.

Wonderla Amusement Water Theme Park (19 kms from venue)

India’s first water theme park, has since its inception been an irresistible attraction
for hundreds of thousands of fun loving people of all ages from all over India.
Spread over 30 acres of landscaped space, built to international standards and
impeccably maintained, Veega Land has a mind boggling array of sophisticated
rides to thrill you till you can’t take any more.

In Kerala, Cochin is undoubtedly the best place to indulge in the delights of

Cherai Beach (24 kms from venue)

Cherai Beach, a picturesque beach, located on the north-end of the Vypeen Island,
which is ideal for swimming. Lined with luscious green coconut groves and paddy
fields, this sandy beach is a unique combination of the sea and the backwaters,
studded with seashells of various hues and shapes. This beach is 10 km long.
Dolphins are occasionally seen here. It has the calm serene Backwaters with
Chinese net on the other side and the land is filled with coconut trees.

Guruvayur Temple (105 kms from venue)

The Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple is the most famous Krishna Temple worshiped by Hindus in India located
in the Thrissur district of Kerala. Punnathurkotta was once the palace of a local ruler, but the palace grounds
are now used to house the elephants belonging to the Guruvayur Temple. Now there are about 66 elephants of
different ages. Gosala is a farm belongs to Guruvayur temple cares hundreds of different variety of cows. All
these animals are offered by the devotes to the temple.

Athirapally and Vazhachal (67 kms from venue)

The charm of the AthirapallyVazhachal waterfalls cannot be described in words.
Starting calmly from the High Ranges, and crashing through gorges overhung with
trees, it is one of the best places in India to re-capture a real sense of the classical
idea of the ‘Picturesque’ – not just calm and sweet, but something wild and natural.

Alleppey Backwater Cruise on a Houseboat (67 kms from venue)

Drive to Alleppey (around 2 hour drive from venue) and enjoy a day cruise on
traditional Kerala houseboat to experience the unqiue backwaters village life of
Kerala.
During the cruise, the countryside offers a close look into an engaging rustic life.
You can see skilled fishermen launching their cockshell boats, large flotillas of ducks waddling down to the water
from thatched houses on the banks, women neck-deep in water, with their waist-length hair heaped in a crown,
searching for fish with their feet and aimless cattle grazing in lush pastureland, where white lotuses lie here and
there in small, low-lying pools. The personal chef on the houseboat will prepare delicious Kerala style lunch for
you on board. At 17:00hrs disembark houseboat in Alleppey and drive back to the venue.
