Holy Spirit (2019-03-18 10301347)

1
• Our subject today:
THE COMING OF THE COMFORTER

2
• Our subject tonight−about−Holy Spirit
−and what He wants−do in your life−mine.
−And one point I want you−remember is
−that−Holy Spirit wants−give you−me power
−to overcome all−bad habits−sinful ways.
−He wants−set you free from your slavery−sin.

• Think of−word power

−when−think about−Holy Spirit.
3
• Danny made plenty−money, he traveled,
−had girlfriends−nice car.
−It seemed−had everything−world
could offer.
−He−someone you−be jealous of.
4
• But−one day−struck Danny−he wasnʼt happy
−when−should have been. Why?
−He seemed−have everything.
−But something−missing.
5
• Eventually−found himself going−church,
−studying−Bible, seeking−know God better.
−In time, Danny gave−heart to Jesus.
−The change−Danny amazed his friends.
−couldnʼt believe−was−same old Danny.
−And, of course−wasnʼt.

−His
emptiness−meaninglessness−gone.
−Danny was−new person in Jesus.

• How do−explain this? What happened−Danny?

−What brought about−change?

• In our ShareHim meetings around the world

–we see the Holy Spirit working in
countless lives.
−We see miraculous changes!
6
• For−past few weeks we have−studying
about Jesus.
−Weʼve talked about His sinless life,
−His death on−cross, and weʼve
talked about
−the promise−eternal life−we have
in Him.
7
• We know that He raised−dead.
−And healed the sick.
−And forgave people−sins.
−Jesus also taught
people−importance−obedience.

• Can you imagine−been like

−actually−been with Him.
−Not many saw Him−person.
−Maybe−few thousand?
• But now Iʼd like−you−notice something
−Jesus said just before−returned−heaven:

Holy Spirit (2019-03-18 10301347)

8
• Listen−amazing promise found in John 14^16
“And I will pray the Father, and He will give you
another Helper, that He may abide with you
forever.”
9
• Isnʼt−wonderful−Jesus asked the Father to
send us...
−Holy Spirit Helper or “the Comforter?”
−We live in−hard−difficult world,
−and Jesus wanted us−know
−that He−give us help
−to make it through every day.

• He promised−send a Comforter.

10
• We tend−think of−Holy Spirit
−as−force or a power,
−but thatʼs really not correct.
−Actually−Holy Spirit
−manifestation−God Himself
−here on earth
−touching lives−changing them
−in wonderful ways
−just−Jesus did−He was here.
11
• The New Testament teaches
−Holy Spirit is God,
−just as Jesus is God
−just as−Father is God.

• We are not talking about three gods,

−but three manifestations−one God.

Holy Spirit (2019-03-18 10301347)

• Yes, God is “One,” but He−composed of

−the Father, the Son−Holy Spirit.
12
−Thatʼs why Jesus told His followers:
(Matthew 28^19)
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the
nations, baptizing them in the name of the
Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”
13
• The Bible talks about−Holy Spirit as a Being...
−with all−attributes of God.
−He is called−"Spirit of Truth."(John 16^13)
−He is called−"Spirit of life." (Romans 8^2)
−He−said to−all knowing: “No one knows
the thoughts of God except the Spirit of
God.”
(1 Corinthians 2^11 NIV)
14
• Only God gives life, and according to−Bible,
thatʼs what−Spirit does.
(Romans 8^11)
“But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus
from the dead dwells in you,
15
He who raised Christ from the dead will also
give life to your mortal bodies through His
Spirit who dwells in you.”

Holy Spirit (2019-03-18 10301347)

16
• Thereʼs−amazing story in−Bible
−two people−who lied
−apostles−early church
−regarding−sale−some property.

When confronted−they were asked…

−why they−lied to−“Holy Spirit.”
−Then−apostles told them−by their actions
−they were lying not−men “but to
God.” (Acts 5^4)
17
• Yes−Holy Spirit−God Who has−ability
−to be with each one−us at−same time,
−guiding us along−pathway to Heaven.
−And this is−crucial role of−Holy Spirit.
−He points us to Jesus
−works in us−so we−become like Jesus.

• The Holy Spirit also enables

us−understand truth.
18
Jesus said so:
(John 16^13)
“However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has
come, He will guide you into all truth;

Holy Spirit (2019-03-18 10301347)

19
• The Holy Spirit−also−voice−conscience
in people.
−How often in places where people−never
heard of Jesus
−or read−Bible, they have−sense−right
and wrong
−that−similar to what−found
in−Bible?
20
• How can−be?
−It is simply−wonderful work of−Holy Spirit
−guiding−true hearted “into all truth.”
−Hopefully, every one−us here tonight
−can testify−we−
−felt−convicting power of−Holy Spirit
−in−messages that have
been presented.
−That is−work of−Holy Spirit!
−To bring conviction−our hearts.
21
• Yes, youʼve learned about Jesus
−how He died for your sins.
−Do you feel drawn−know Jesus?
−If so, rejoice−you−drawn by−Holy Spirit!

• This is the work of the Holy Spirit−

• BIG LESSON tonight,

−DON'T IGNORE VOICE and
−LEADINGS OF THE SPIRIT!

Holy Spirit (2019-03-18 10301347)

22
• Youʼve heard truth about−Sabbath,
−the Ten Commandments−other truths.
−Do you feel conviction−these things?
−If so, rejoice, because
−you−being touched by−Holy Spirit!
23
• Yes, friends, even−fact−you have come here
−where−Word of God−being preached
−is−good news that−Holy Spirit−working
in−life.
24
• That His creatures should be free to choose
−to make−own decisions−so important
to God.
−He went to−cross rather−force
us−follow Him.
25
• But He does convict us.
−Have you sensed God speaking
−to your heart−these meetings?
−Donʼt resist that conviction, my friends.
26
• In fact, the Bible tells us in (Romans 5^5)
“the love of God has been poured out in our
hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to
us.”

• Are you convicted that you

−need−love−God in your heart?
−Donʼt resist, my friend, and Godʼs love
−will be poured−your heart right now.
−Just tell Him, “Yes, come in, Lord.”

Holy Spirit (2019-03-18 10301347)

−And He will.

• Perhaps youʼre convicted−Sabbath

−Ten Commandments
−or other truths−studied so far?
−If so, donʼt resist.
−The Devil−tell you−obeying God
−will take all−joy out of your life.
27
• But our Lord tells us in John 13^17 (KJV)
“If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye
do them.”

28
• Have−ever had calluses−your hands?
How−you get them?
−You started working hard on−project,
−perhaps using−tool like−hammer or–shovel.
−At first your hands−sore;
maybe−would−bleed.
−But after−while−began to toughen
−until one day−would feel nothing
when you work.
−Your hands−become so
hard−calloused,
−that you couldnʼt feel any more.
29
• Itʼs−same with−conviction of–Holy Spirit.
−The more we resist−
−more we harden ourselves
−to the loving invitation of−Spirit.

Holy Spirit (2019-03-18 10301347)

30
• You−see this principle in−lot of ways.
−Have−done something once
−knew you shouldnʼt
−and you−really troubled at first?
−Your conscience bothered you.
31
• But then−did it again−didnʼt bother you
as much?
−And each time−did it again
−bothered less−less.
−You may−gotten−place where
−you convinced yourself
−what you were doing
−was actually OK?
32
• This same principle applies
−with−convicting power−Holy Spirit.
−When−resist what−Spirit tells us we−do,
−we are heading toward committing
−“unpardonable sin,”
−sin God cannot forgive.
−A sin−canʼt be forgiven? What would
that be?

• After all, when−read−Bible, we find

−God can forgive even adultery−murder.
−Even King David committed adultery
−and murder and−forgiven.
−So what sin−it talking about
when−refers
−to the unpardonable sin?

Holy Spirit (2019-03-18 10301347)

33
• Letʼs look−Bible tell us in−words of Jesus:
(Matthew 12^31, 32)
“Therefore I say to you, every sin and
blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the
blasphemy against the Spirit will not be
forgiven men.
34
Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of
Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever
speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be
forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to
come.”

• So−see here that−“unpardonable sin”

−is−sin against−Holy Spirit.
−All manner−sin and
blasphemy−be forgiven,
−but not sin against−Holy Spirit.

• What−this sin, this blasphemy

against−Holy Spirit
−that we want to avoid?
35
• We have seen−Holy Spirit comes to:
1) Convict us−sin
−so we seek forgiveness from God.
2) Point us−Jesus.
3) Teach us all truth.
4) Give−power−obey Godʼs commands.
Continued on next page

Holy Spirit (2019-03-18 10301347)

• We saw earlier that−Holy Spirit−doing on

earth now
−what Jesus did−He was here.
−Heʼs leading−teaching us how−obtain
eternal life
−and become−brand new person.
36
• I love this promise found in (1 John 1^9)
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just
to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from
all unrighteousness.”

• In fact, in the very verses we just looked at,

Jesus said,

“Every sin and blasphemy shall be

forgiven you.”

−Thatʼs all kinds−sin, everything.

−So what sins canʼt God forgive?
−Only those−donʼt confess.
37
• If we donʼt confess−repent−our sins
−then weʼre obviously...what?
−Weʼre obviously refusing−surrender
−to−prompting−Holy Spirit.
−And if−refuse−long enough,
−we become hardened−Spiritʼs
pleadings
−God can−no longer reach us.

Holy Spirit (2019-03-18 10301347)

38
• Again−sin against−Holy Spirit is the sin of
−continually not responding−His promptings
−until we−no longer feel them.

39
• A pilot−flying his small plane−a distant airport
−in Central America.
−He filed−flight plan to−correct airport
−mistakenly flew toward another airport
−100 miles off course−in−wrong
direction.
40
• Flying after dark over unfamiliar terrain,
−he was unaware of−problem.
−The controller tried to reach him
−but when–Pilot responded−insisted−he was
on–right course.
−Controller tried−get−pilot to
change direction,
−but–Pilot insisted−he was okay.
41
• Finally−pilot flew out−range−could no
longer hear
−the pleadings of−controller.
−The problem wasnʼt−controller.
−Problem was that−pilot got so far
out−range
−he−no longer−hear
voice−controller.

• So what is−unpardonable sin?

−Unpardonable sin−continuous refusal

Holy Spirit (2019-03-18 10301347)

−of−person−respond to
−Holy Spiritʼs promptings.

• In−Bible−Pharisee came−Jesus by night

−and had−secret meeting with Him.
42
• At one point, Jesus said to−Pharisee,
“unless one is born of water and the
Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of
God.” (John 3^5)

• In other words, Jesus−saying

−unless−we let Spirit−work in us,
−we canʼt be saved.
−We canʼt enter−kingdom of God
−because our sins havenʼt
been forgiven.

• Why not? Because−havenʼt surrendered

−to−promptings of−Holy Spirit.
−We have not submitted to−Spiritʼs power,
and allowed Him to change our ways.
−If−do this long enough
−we will commit−unpardonable sin.
43
• A young woman came−her pastor,
−worried, depressed−afraid.
−She thought that
she−committed−unpardonable sin.
−She−so sorry−what she had done.
Continued on next page

Holy Spirit (2019-03-18 10301347)

−She wanted forgiveness−to be right

with God,
−but she thought it−too late.
44
• However−pastor had good news for her.
−“The fact that you are here,” he said,
−“the fact−you have confessed your sin and
−want forgiveness proves
−that you−not committed−unpardonable
sin.
−If you had committed that sin,
−you wouldnʼt be here.”
45
• How can−know if−Holy Spirit working
within us?
−You may have had−Christian friend ask you,
−“Are you filled with the Holy Spirit?”
−Or they may say, “Have you received
−the baptism of the Holy Spirit?”

• Often what they mean by–question is,

−“Do you have−gift of speaking
in tongues?”

• Letʼs see what−Bible says about−gift

of tongues.

Holy Spirit (2019-03-18 10301347)

46
In−book of Acts, after−Holy Spirit fell,
look−what happened:
(Acts 2^4−8,11)
“And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit
and began to speak with other tongues, as
the Spirit gave them utterance. And there
were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout
men, from every nation under heaven.
47
And when this sound occurred, the multitude
came together, and were confused, because
everyone heard them speak in his own
language. Then they were all amazed and
marveled,

• In Acts−tongues = languages.

48
saying to one another, ‘Look, are not all these
who speak Galileans? And how is it that we
hear, each in our own language in which we
were born?
49
...we hear them speaking in our own tongues
the wonderful works of God.ʼ”

Holy Spirit (2019-03-18 10301347)

50
• What do we see here? We see−early Christians
−were given−gift of speaking in tongues.
−But what language−that?
−They were speaking−
known languages. −Not just
"noise"
−People from all around−world
−each heard−disciples
speaking−own language.
−Why−this gift given? To
communicate−gospel.

• Most of us can best witness−

−in our own language.

• Now I want you−see what Jesus said about

−who can receive−Holy Spirit:
51
• (John 14^15, 16)
“ If you love Me, keep My commandments. And I
will pray the Father, and He will give you another
HELPER (Comforter) that He may abide with
you forever"
52
• Jesus teaches−our love for God−expressed
−in obedience to His Commandments.
−Obedience−sign−
we have received–Holy Spirit.

Holy Spirit (2019-03-18 10301347)

53
• Again read with me−very clear words:
(Acts 5^32)
“And we are His witnesses to these things, and
so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to
those who obey Him."
54
• The Bible also talks−another way−can know
−we−received the Holy Spirit. And that−this.
−Do we have−fruit of−Holy Spirit in
our lives?
55
• The Bible describes−fruit of−Spirit this way in
Galatians 5^22, 23
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,
longsuffering, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, self−control.”
–These are character traits.

• There is no more powerful sign

−that we−received−Holy Spirit
−than if−fruit of−Spirit−is flourishing
in−lives.
56
• Let me ask, are−sensing−conviction
−Holy Spirit here tonight?
−Do you want−have forgiveness of sins
−and receive new life in Jesus?

Holy Spirit (2019-03-18 10301347)

57
• Do you want−be with Jesus in heaven
−and become more−more like Him
even now?
−Do you want–Holy Spirit to
grow−fruit−Spirit in your life?
−Then rejoice because−Holy Spirit is
working in you.
58
• And, my friend, the Holy Spirit wants to work a
miracle in your life as well. Just let Him into your
life tonight and He will begin a wonderful work in
you that will last for eternity.

• Appeal:
I believe that God is talking to each of you here
tonight. Is there someone who has been
hesitating to make the decision to walk with
Jesus, or to be baptized? Please make that
decision now. Don't delay.

Jesus promised that we would receive power

when the Holy Spirit came upon them. Donʼt you
feel the need of this power in your Christian life
today?

#1. I want The Power of the Holy Spirit in my

life. I want the Holy Spirit to fill me and use
me to take the GOOD NEWS to everyone I can.

#2. I want to say YES to the Holy Spirit and want

to be BAPTIZED or REBAPTIZED.

• We need to pray for that power today. I am

going to ask all of you who feel the need of this
power in your life to kneel with me whereever
you are and join me in asking God to fill us with
the Holy Spirit today.

• PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, thank You so much for the
Promise of the Holy Spirit. We might not be able
to see Him, but we can feel His power in our
lives. Lord, we thank You that tonight, right now,
the Holy Spirit is speaking to our hearts. Father,
may each one who is being touched realize what
is happening, and may we all respond by
surrendering our sinful ways to You and claiming
for ourselves the promise of a new life in You
right now. We pray in Jesusʼ name. Amen.
