One Act Play Reflection

This fictional piece discussed Mobi, a robot, is brought home to a young teenage girl in

order to help her cope with the loss of her parents. However, he breaks a crucial law of robotics

and is sent to court, in which the judge must determine whether or not Mobi is innocent or guilty.

Within this play, I had to consider important elements such as dialogue and characterization.

Mobi was a robot, so he would most likely be more proper and technical in his speech. Courtney,

the teenager, would have more breaks in her speech and it would be less proper.

Due to separate roles in the story, it was imperative that the characters were able to be

distinguished. I had to remind myself the significance of determining a balance between dialogue

and contextualization. If only dialogue is used, then it is nearly impossible to understand the

setting and roles in the story because your audience is merely thrown into the middle of the story.

On the other hand, only using contextualization takes away the dynamic of the character and the

audience’s ability to relate to the character. I struggled with finding the balance between these

two elements. However, in the end I was able to construct a well rounded play, despite the trials.

An aspect of the piece I enjoyed was the characterization. For me, it was fun to mix formal and

informal because normally I only write formally. My creative writing process for this play was to

brainstorm an idea and then allow it to come to life in my mind. I determined the ending, a

cliffhanger, before I even started. This made it very helpful and beneficial because I only had to

fill in the gaps. Then, I sketched a brief outline of the characters and how I wanted to portray

their dynamic. After the outline was finished, I put the due date in my planner one day before it

need to be turned in so that I could guarantee it would be finished on time. Writing this play got

me out of my comfort zone and even helped later on in AP Literature for I had learned a balance

of dialogue and context.
