REFLECTION PAPER

P21 FRAMEWORK

“Education is changing. Competition is changing internationally. The workplace, jobs and

skill demands are changing.” This P21 framework is an eye-opener to educational body

to see the veracity of transformative education. Over the years, education transforms

better and better. In the 20th century, classrooms have been described as “teacher-

centred, fragmented curriculum, students working in isolation and memorizing facts.

While, 21st century classrooms focus on “students working collaboratively, Student-

centred: teacher is facilitator/coach. Students use information they have located to

construct their knowledge and understanding. And Students are self-directed, moving

from independent activities to interdependent activities as needed”

Framework for 21st Century Learning has this main objective of integrating skills into

teaching of key academic subjects to provide a unified and collective vision for learning.

This Framework informs us repetitively that students of this generation must become

proficient, skilled and mastered of their expertise in order for them to succeed in work

and in life. Moreover, “Students must also learn the essential skills for success in today’s

world, such as critical thinking, problem solving, communication and collaboration…,

combining the entire Framework with the necessary support systems—standards,

assessments, curriculum and instruction, professional development and learning

environments—students are more engaged in the learning process and graduate better

prepared to thrive in today’s global economy, the Partnership views all the components

as fully interconnected in the process of 21st century teaching and learning.”

The conceptualization is sustained by the “Key subjects of the 21st century themes” as

the centre of the framework. This means that students should have known and acquired

the 21st century skills and mastered content knowledge in different academic areas in

order for them to be globally competitive. Aligned is the principle of not just knowing

facts, but promoting higher level of understanding of the key concept.

The second phase, LEARNING AND INNOVATION SKILLS. This phase focuses on the

development of the 4C’s; Critical Thinking, which allows students to think metacognitive

strategies by providing higher order thinking skills. Communication, it is the idea of using

verbal and non-verbal cues to express hypothetically their comprehension. This skill is

much needed to be developed, for speaking is our daily activity. Collaboration, is a way

of establishing bond with their peers, researchers have found out that the more we

socialize to others, the more learning it occurs. And Creativity, these are the essential

skill to prepare 21st century students for the future.

Connected in the framework is the idea of INFORMATION, MEDIA AND TECHNOLOGY

SKILLS. As technology advanced in this century, several advantages are being observed

such as the access to information. 21st century learners should have acquired the skills in

the use of Technology for it is the main powerful tool in this century.

Lastly, 21st CENTURY SUPPORT SYSTEMS. The elements described below are the critical

systems necessary to ensure student mastery of 21st century skills. 21st century

standards, assessments, curriculum, instruction, professional development and learning

environments must be aligned to produce a support system that produces 21st century

outcomes for today’s students.

It is always said that educators should understand the importance of the 21 st century

skills and the integration of the key elements in a daily instruction. For, Nothing top and

beat if our students reach the pedestal and highest potential of their well-being. And

more if they succeed in their choses career.
