BITUMEN PRODUCTS
 Highway 1 is a supplier of all grades of bitumen and
emulsions to the South Pacific.
 The product is delivered in either 200 liter drums or 1 tone
bulk bags.
 Bagged bitumen is a new innovation in the transportation
of bitumen. There are a number of benefits that make this
a very appealing option for many operators.
1. Speed
Below are a series of pictures taken over 3-4 minutes that shows the
speed at which a 1 tone bag can be discharged into a bitumen tank.
This tank was filled as fast as the container was emptied - in just under
1.5 hours.

2. Convenience
Handling 1 x 1000kg bag of bitumen in less time than it takes to
handle 1 drum.

3. No Wastage
Unlike drums 100% pf the bitumen is recovered

4. Handling
The handling is much easier, less time consuming and not nearly as
messy as drums. You also do not the hassle of drum disposal.

5. Reduced Freight & Storage Costs

Bringing in a full 20T container reduces freight costs per tone and
compared to bulk freight there is a greatly reduced cost of storage as
you can bring in your stock in a Just-In-Time basis.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION ABOUT BITUMEN & ADDITIVES
PRODUCTS

Bitumen (which is sometimes called Asphalt) should not be confused with

what is known as 'tar'. Tar is a derivative of the coal manufacturing product
- it is also black and sticky and has in the past been used in road
construction but contains a lot more 'nasties'. Bitumen however is
essentially the bottom phase of the crude oil distillation process. Very simply
you start with the light fractions such as natural gas, kerosene, diesel and
then you go down into your different weighted oils (light to heavy) and you
eventually hit bitumen right down the bottom. This used to be a waste
product, now it is a widely sort after commodity item that is a vital part of
the world wide roading network.

Within the bitumen product class there are a range of products. They
generally range from very hard to soft bitumen's that are manufactured for
different purposes. Very hard bitumens are used as waterproofing products
on roofs and specialty asphalt mixes while softer grade as used in very cold
climates are used in road construction. Polymers can also be added to
bitumen to create a variety of different products. Here at Highway 1 we
produce and supply various polymer modified bitumen products.
