Practicalities. Salesiana Publisher Inc. Makati City. PP 60-61

This lesson plan is for a 9th grade math class on solving quadratic inequalities. The objectives are for students to illustrate quadratic inequalities and solve quadratic inequalities. Key concepts are that a quadratic inequality can be written as a quadratic expression on one side and zero on the other. Students will learn to find the solutions of the corresponding equality and use the number line to determine the solution set of the original inequality based on which intervals make the inequality true. Examples of solving and graphing quadratic inequalities will be worked through as a class and in groups.

Lesson Plan in Math- Grade 9

Quadratic Inequalities

Learning Competency : Solve quadratic inequalities.

I. Objectives
At the end of the 60-minute period, the students will be able to:
1. illustrate quadratic inequalities and
2. solve quadratic inequalities.
II. Subject Matter
Topic : Quadratic Inequalities
Concepts : A quadratic inequality is an equality that can be written so that
one side is a quadratic expression and the other side is zero. A solution of a
quadratic inequality in one variable is a value of the variable that makes
the inequality true.
Value: Accuracy

Practicalities. Salesiana Publisher Inc. Makati City. Pp 60-61
Materials : visual aid, flash cards
III. Procedure
A. Classroom Routine
B. Review
Find the solution/s of each of the following mathematical
sentences.
1. x + 5 > 8
2. r -3 < 10
3. 𝑥 2 + 5𝑥 + 6 = 0
 How did you find the solution/s of each mathematical
sentences?
C. Motivation
Present this to the class.
𝑥 2 + 9𝑥 + 20 = 0 2𝑥 2 + 7𝑥 + 5 > 0
 Describe the two mathematical sentences.
 What is the difference between the two mathematical
sentences?
D. Lesson Proper
1. Reveal the subject matter and objectives of the session.
2. Ask students to determine whether each mathematical sentence is a
quadratic inequality or not.
𝑥 2 + 9𝑥 + 14 > 0 3𝑠 2 − 5𝑠 + = 1
12 − 5𝑥 + 𝑥 2 = 0 4𝑡 2 − 7𝑡 + 2 ≤ 0
 How do you describe quadratic inequality?
 Give at least three examples of quadratic
inequality.
3. Present to the class on how to find the solution of quadratic
inequalities.
To solve a quadratic inequality, find the roots of its
corresponding equality. The points corresponding to the roots
of the equality, when plotted on the number line, separates the
line into two or three intervals. An interval is part of the
solution of the inequality if a number in that interval makes the
inequality true.
 Ask students to find the solution set of 𝑥 2 + 9𝑥 +
12 = 0 then graph. Work by pair.
 How did you find the solution set of the inequality?
 How did you graph the solution set?
 How would you describe the graph of the solution set of
the given inequality?
 How many solutions does the given inequality has?
4. Provide additional examples if necessary.
5. Application. Group the students by five.
Find the solution set of each of the following quadratic
inequalities then graph.
1. 𝑥 2 − 5𝑥 − 14 > 0
2. 𝑚2 − 7𝑚 − 14 ≤ 0
E. Generalization.
Give examples of quadratic inequality. How are you going to solve
quadratic inequality?
IV. Evaluation/ Assessment. Quiz ½ Crosswise
Determine whether or not each of the following points is a solution of the
inequality y < 2𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 − 5
1. A (-1,6)
2. B (1,8)
3. C ( -5, 10)
4. D (3,6)
5. E ( -3, 4)
V. Assignment. ½ Crosswise
Find the solution set of the given quadratic inequality.
y < 2𝑥 2 + 7𝑥 + 5
