Background
Bhutan opened its door to modern development only in 1960. Since then it has experienced
unprecedented economic growth and rapid development. The human development indicators and
world development show significant improvement after 1980s. In last two decade, Bhutan has
gradually urbanized and its sustainability has been taken into due consideration in political
mainstream. It is still an aid-driven economy and depends mostly on hydropower export to India
and tourism industry. The majority of the fund for urban infrastructure is from donors. Therefore,
sustainability of the aid dependent economy is questionable and Bhutan needs to find its way for
sustainable and resilient economy against many threats of globalization. Therefore, study and
research on urbanization and its impact on economy is important against the already dwindling
agriculture and habitable land.
According to BLSS (Bhutan Living Standard Survey), 2017, 34 percent of population
live in urban areas against forecast of 50 percent (Bhutan Vision 2020). The total population of
the country is 692,895 (BLSS, 2017). The urbanization rate has increased to 34 percent in 2017
from only 20 percent in 2003. While increasing urbanization may contribute to economic
growth, it is often consider as bad impact of globalization among some orthodox and pro-cultural
Bhutanese society. Urbanization and cultural conservation is contradictory in nature, but
Bhutanese should also realize the importance of agglomeration economics and reap the benefits
of urbanization. Principles of Gross National Happiness (GNH) is already guiding the
development, be it urban or rural development. Thus, deviation from rural-centric development
to urban- development may assist to achieve Gross National Happiness.
Research Question
My research topic on “Urbanization and its Economics in Bhutan” will answer following
questions:
1. Identify the positive and negative aspects of urbanization in Bhutan.
2. Analysis of trends of urbanization in Bhutan.
3. Issues of urbanization and policy response by the government.
4. What are the causes of urbanization and its effects to Bhutanese Society?
5. Provide recommendation based on findings.
Proposed Methodology
1. Analysis of demographic trends of urban and rural areas. (Data Source: Census and
BLSS, NSB).
2. Correlation between urbanization rate and GDP per capita. (Regression analysis) (Data
set: world bank data set)
3. Analysis of Construction sector. (Increase in investment on construction sector would
indicate investment in urban infrastructure sector. Analysis of Finance of the construction
sector. (Investment of Urban Infrastructure= overall investment on infrastructure – Rural
and other infrastructure). ( Data source: Trade statistics book)
4. Analysis of Service Sector (Growth in service employment will indicate employment in
non-agrarian activities). Spatial analysis of the employment generated in Bhutan to
understand the urban population scenarios of various region. (Source Data: NLC Map
and GIS data set, NSB)
5. Transportation, (increase in import of more vehicle means increase in urbanization). Case
study of Thimphu city bus services to understand mobility of Thimphu and government
interventions in it. Analysis of availability of finance for vehicle. Calculation of
infrastructure and land required for the vehicles. (Trade statistics, RSTA reports, RMA
dataset)
6. Affordable Housing Analysis (Availability of Finance for housing), Home ownership and
living standard. (UN-Habitat Report, RMA data, BLSS and census data).
From above methodology, it would broadly cover the urbanization in Bhutan and its effect on
Bhutanese economy. Moreover, study will give indication of issues and solution related to
urbanization.
