Chapter I

I. Instroduction

A. Importance of the Study

In this research different botanical extracts will be applied to observe the effects of the botanical extract
as an alternative insecticide in peachy production. Pechay is biennial herb that arranges spirally and
spreads and grows upright forming a cylindrical bundle. Used mainly for its immature but fully expanded
tender leaves. Pechay can be grown from low to mid evaluations throughout the year. Productin is best
however it grows slowly season in a sandy to clay loam soil. Accordingly benefits of pechay are mainly: a
good source of Vitamin B and is rich in vitamins and mineral which helps the overall nutrient intake of an
adult.

Inorganic fertilizer has long been used in vegetable production. The yield is of great contribution to the
income of the institution. However, intensive agriculture or the conventional method has been criticized
because of its negative impacts. Aside from being expensive and of its fluctuating price, it poses hazard
to the environment. High amount of synthetic chemical fertilizers contributes to pollution of ground and
surface waters of lakes reservoir. In addtition, intensive agriculture in the country adequately meet food
production needs, but many of the soils lost 30% to 50% soil organic matter.

The combined use of organic and inorganic fertilizer in crop production has been widely recognized as a
way of increasing farm yield sustainining the productivity of the soil. The effects of in organic fertilizer
are readily accepted by most farmers because fertilizer could bring about changes in the chemical,
microbiological and physical properties of soild. High levels of organic fertilizer in thesoil improve its
structure which is beneficial to vegetative production.

A. Benefits and Beneficiaries

Students. This study provides a low-cost student available method to supply plants.

Community. This study would be a better alternative than using artificial insecticides as is known today
artificially made chemicals are hazardous to human health and to the environment.

Farmers. This study provides a natural method to prevent insects or pest that would interrucpt growth
and yield performance specially to pechay even in a large scale of materials are available.

Future Researchers. This study is beneficial and is a great way to find reference materials for their own
research study.

B. Objective of the Study

Generally, the study was conducted to determine the effect of Vermi Compost Organic Fertilizer plus
inorganic fertilizer.

Specifically, it was conducted to:

1. To determine the yield performance of pechay as affected by organic fertilizer plus inorganic
fertilizer, and
2. To determine which is the best treatments.

C. Time and Place of the Study

The study was conducted at the experimental area of Jones Rural School Main campus from January 01
to March 15, 2018.

D. Scope and Delimitation

The study focused on the evaluation of the growth and yield of bitter gourd as affected by organic
fertilizer plus inorgaic fetilizer. The parameters gathered were number of marketable and
non-marketable fruits per plant, wight of fruits per plant and fruit length per plant.

E. Definition of Terms

For better und3erstandin of the study, the followin terms are defined operationally:

Fertilizer. It is any material either of natural and synthetic material, including manure and nitrogen,
phosphorus, and potassium compounds, appled into soil or foliage of the crop to increase its capacity to
support plant growth.

Growth. It refers to the sum total of vaious physiological processes to increase the dry weight and
irreversible increase in size of the plants.

Organic Agriculture. It is a production system that sustains the health of soils ecosysytem and peaple. It
refers on ecologycal processs bodiversity and cycles adapted to conditions , rather than the use of
inputs with adverse effects. Organic agriculture combines tradition , innovation and science to benefits
the share environment and promote fair relationship and a good quality of life for all involed.

Potencial Yeild . It is an estimate of upper limit of yeild increase that can be obtained from a plant.

Rates o Fertilizer. It refers to the weagth of a particural fertilizer applied per unit area

REcommendation Rate . Itis the amuont of nutriients needs by the crop to attain its optimum Yeild.

Variety . A gruop of simiral plants whichh, by structural features and performance , can be identified
from others within the same species.

Yeild It is economic part of the plant used for human and animal consumption and for commercail
purpose.
