EX.

NO:1

1) BRINELL HARDNESS TEST

Aim

To determine the Brinnell hardness number for the given specimen using
Brinell Hardness Testing Machine.

Apparatus Required

 Brinell Hardness Testing Machine

 Specimen
 Ball Indenter
 Brinell Microscopy

Procedure

1. Initially the machine is kept in unloading position using hand lever. The
required weight is added in the weighing hanger.
2. The motor is started and kept in position till the hanger reaches its top
position.
3. The specimen is placed securely on the testing table by rotating the hand
wheel in clockwise direction till the small pointer reaches red dot. The
hand lever is turned to loading position
4. When the long pointer reaches a steady position the load may be released
after 15 seconds.
5. The hand wheel is rotated in anticlockwise direction and the specimen is
removed. The diameter of impression is measured using Brinell
microscope and the hardness number is calculated using formula
6. The procedure is repeated for three times and the average value is noted.
Formula

B.H.N =

Where, P is the load applied in the machine in kg

D is the dia. of the indenter and
d is the dia. of the impression (indentation)

ROCKWELL HARDNESS TEST
Aim

To find the Rockwell Hardness Number of the given test specimen by using
Rockwell hardness testing machine
Apparatus Required

 Rockwell hardness testing machine

 Test specimen
 1/16’’Steel Ball Indentor
 Diamond Indentor
Procedure

1. Initially the machine is kept in unloaded position. The scale is set as

needed and the indentor is fixed to its position by using the Allen keys.
2. The specimen is mounted on the working table by rotating wheel at the
bottom of working table till the pointer in the small dial comes to rest at
the red point.
3. At this position the machine is loaded by rotating the hand lever clockwise
to load position. The load is released after 15 seconds to unload position
4. The dial reading is noted down and the experiment is repeated for three
times by keeping the indenter at different position on the specimen.
5. The hardness value is found out by finding the average of the three values.
