Computer System
• A computer system consists of both hardware
and information stored on hardware.
Information stored on computer hardware is
often called software.
• The hardware components of a computer system
are the electronic and mechanical parts.
• The software components of a computer system
are the data and the computer programs.
Hardware
• Physical components of the computer
• Examples:
– Input devices
– Output devices
– Central Processing Unit
– Primary Storage (memory)
– Secondary Storage (backing store)
• NOTE: input and output devices are
collectively known as peripherals

• Set of instructions /programs that are loaded
into the memory of computer inorder to
perform task or to control the operation of the
computer
System Software
• The system software is a collection of programs
designed to operate, control, and extend the
processing capabilities of the computer itself.
• These software products comprise of programs
written in low-level languages, which interact
with the hardware at a very basic level.
• serves as the interface between the hardware
and the end users.
• generally prepared by the computer
