INTRODUCTION

ABOUT THE TOEFL TEST


TOEFL is one of the principal tools of measurement that evaluates the ability of a
person to use and understand English as an academic language. TOEFL stands
for Test of English as a Foreign Language. It pertains to the scheme of evaluation
meant for testing the capability of non-English speaking candidates. Nowadays,
TOEFL is required primarily by college, universities, government agencies,
business, or scholarship program.

TOEFL is a standardized test of academic English that is managed and directed


all around the world. It comprises of all the necessary grammar, idioms, listening
skills and vocabulary needed in the English language. The test has three sections
for Reading, Listening, and Structure & Written Expression.

Keep in mind that as a student you need to prepare for the test by consciously Grade 12a – Unit 1 TOEFL Listening Comprehension
making an effort to find out as many new words as possible. Take the exam
because it will be a vital step for you to get into the college or university you
have always desired for. It will also immensely help you in obtaining the
professional certificates that are required for you to get a job.

TOEFL LISTENING COMPREHENSION – DIAGNOSTIC TEST
First, try the diagnostic test. You need to answer 50 questions in 35 minutes. No
replays. The test consists of the following sections:

Part A: Short dialogues – 30 questions


Fun Facts
Part B: Long Conversations – 8 questions
“You have approximately
Part C: Long Talks – 12 questions 42 seconds to answer
each question”

Helpful Tip
Whilst listening, read the answers because it might be a restatement or synonym.
However, be careful with similar sounds.

Let’s give it a try!

1. Prepare your pencil/pen and eraser


2. Take your answer sheet and diagnostic test book from the trainer
3. Fill in your data correctly, e.g. name, test type (listening diagnostic test),

etc.
4. Answer each question on the answer sheet by covering the circles on the
SECTION 1.

After 35 minutes, swap your answer sheet with a classmate.

Check your classmate’s answer based on your trainer’s answers.

Convert the result into a TOEFL score. See Scoring Information on page 100.

a. Be in groups of fours or threes


b. Decide who will be A, B, C, or D (if in 3s, decide who will be D)
c. Take a piece of paper for A, B, and C
d. Look at the following task for each group member

Listen to each group member’s sentence, and answer the question


D based on the answers shown on the PowerPoint. You have 60
seconds.
