TYPHOID
FEVER AT A
FEVER
an acute illness associated with fever
GLANCE caused by the Salmonella enterica
serotype Typhi bacteria.
 Contracted by the
ingestion of
contaminated food
or water
 Diagnosis of
typhoid fever is
made when
Salmonella
bacteria are
detected with
stool, urine, or
blood cultures.
 Typhoid fever is
treated with
antibiotics.
 Typhoid fever
symptoms are
poor appetite,
headaches,
generalized aches
and pains, fever,
and lethargy.
 Approx. 3-5% of
patients become
carries.
Medical Treatment:
INCUBATION PERIOD Chloramphenicol was the original
drug of choice for many years.
Because of rare serious side effects,
chloramphenicol has been replaced
by other effective antibiotics.
The incubation period for typhoid
fever is usually 8–14 days, but this
depends on the infective dose and
can vary from 3 days to 1 month.

Period of Communicability:
The diseases are communicable as
long as typhoid bacilli are present in
excreta. Some patients become
permanent carriers.

The two major symptoms of typhoid AFP Medical Center – Infectious
are fever and rash. Typhoid fever is Ward
particularly high, gradually increasing
over several days up to 104 degrees
Fahrenheit, or 39 – 40 degrees Celsius.

The rash, which does not affect every


patient, consists of rose-colored spots,
particularly on the neck and
abdomen.
