M900 Balota - Orșova

Short description
This add-on recreates the Romanian railway route between the towns of Orșova and
Balota, part of the M-900 national mainline and of The TEN-TRailway Corridor 8
(Rhine–Danube).

Route starts in Orsova, port city on the Danube from where the line enters the
spectacular Danube Gorge, sometimes also called the “Iron Gates” (Romanian: “Porțile
de Fier”, Serbian: “Đerdapska klisura”, German: “Eisernes Tor”, Hungarian: “Vaskapu”)
due to its steep mountain cliffs, whirlpools and narrow waters of the river. The Gorge is
also the natural border between Romania and Serbia with the river separating the
southern Carpathian Mountains from the northwestern foothills of the Balkan Mountains,
with National Parks and protected areas on both sides.

After a series of viaducts , bridges and tunnels the line exits the Gorge at the Gura Văii
train station, passing nearby the iconic Iron Gate I Dam and Hydroelectric Power Station
(Romanian: Porțile de Fier I, Serbian:/Đerdap I) and reaches the city of Drobeta Turnu
Severin. From here on the line climbs gently while also separating gradually from the
widening river. After Drobeta Turnu Severin Mărfuri (station and marshaling yard), the
route goes over the Balota Hill in a series of horseshoe curves with steep gradients (an
average of 28 per mill) and severe speed restrictions. This railway section is also
considered one of the most challenging and demanding in Romania.

Route ends at Balota , first leveled train station. Usually here trains get interconnected
again, after being divided into smaller consists for uphill or downhill transit.

History
The line was completed in 1879 when the Austro-Hungarian network was
interconnected with the Romanian one in the station of Vârciorova (border point at that
time).

Traffic grew constantly not only because it connected the Eastern parts of the continent
with Central Europe, but also because very often ships had to be dragged upstream by
steam locomotives.

The construction of the joint Romanian-Yugoslavian Iron Gate I Dam commenced in

1964. and it also meant the rise of upsetream water level with an average of 30m. By
1969, the line was completely rebuilt on higher ground and also electrified.

At the time of completion of the dam in 1972, the old line and railway stations were
underwater, with the new ones being built in some cases at considerable distance.

- CFR Călători 43-0060 (for passenger service)

CFR Class 43 data sheet:

Total produced: 130

Weight: 76 t
Length: 15,47m
Engine power: 3,400kW (3000 HP)
Max. speed: 120km/h (75mph)

Important !
When using the Romanian electric locomotives , the catenaty neutral zone
(section) present on the route can only be passed with disconnected main switch
(X key). Failing to disconnect before passing the “Switch Off” sign will cause the
scenario to end !! After successfully passing the “Switch On” sign, the driver can
reconnect the main switch (Z key)
