Section – A

1. What is El Nino effect? 1

2. Calculate the length of the DNA of bacteriophage lambda that has 48502 base
pairs. 1
3. If two genes are located far apart from each other on a chromosome, how the
frequency of recombination will get affected? 1
4. What is the full form of LSD and MALT? 1
5. Draw a diagram showing fusion of isogametes and also name the organism that
reproduces in this manner. 1

Section – B
6. Explain the role of genus Nucleopolyhedrovirus in an ecological sensitive area. 2
7. Name the following:
(i) A virus used as an insecticide.
(ii) Microbe used to kill insect larvae.
(iii) The fungus used to kill plant pathogen.
(iv) The bacterium found in anaerobic sludge 2
8.

Study the diagram showing replication of HIV in humans and answer the
following questions accordingly :
(i) Write the chemical nature of the coat ‘A’.
(ii) Name the enzyme ‘B’ acting on ‘X’ to produce molecule ‘C’. Name ‘C’.
(iii) Mention the name of the host cell ‘D’ the HIV attacks first when it enters into
the human body.
(iv) Name the two different cells the new viruses ‘E’ subsequently attack. 2
9. (a) Recombination frequency between three recessive genes present on X-
chromosome of Drosophila were found to be as follows:
i) sc(scute) and ec(Echinus or rough eye)= 7.6%
ii) ec and v (veinless)=9.7%
iii) cs and v= 17.3%
Design a gene map for the above.
(b) The base sequence on one strand of DNA is 5’ ATGTCTATA 3’
i) Write the base sequence of its complimentary strand in 5’3’direction.
ii) If RNA strand is transcribed by this strand, what would be the sequence of
RNA? 1+1/2+1/2
10. What are the different outbreeding devices that flowering plants have developed
to encourage cross-pollination?
OR
The steps in a programme are
- Collection of germplasm
- Cross breeding of selected parents
-Selecting superior recombinant progeny
-Testing, release and marketing new cultivars.
a) What is programme related to?
b) Name two special qualities as basis of selection of progeny.
c) What was the outcome of the programme?
d) What is the popular name given to this outcome? 2

Section – C

11. Give reasons why :

(i) Most zygotes in angiosperms divide only after certain amount of
endosperm is formed.
(ii) Micropyle remains as a small pore in the seed coat of a seed.
(iii) Integuments of an ovule harden and water content is highly reduced, as
the seed matures. 3
12. One chromosome contains one molecule of DNA. In eukaryotes the length of
DNA molecule is enormously large. Explain how such a long molecule fits into tiny
nucleus. 3
13. Why is pedigree analysis done in the study of human genetics? State the
conclusion that can be drawn from it. 3
14. Draw a labeled diagram of a sectional view of a typical anatropous ovule. Mention
the fate of all the components of the embryo sac after fertilization. 3
15. Briefly describe the two key concepts of Darwinian Theory of Evolution. 3
16. Interpret three effects of loss of biodiversity in a region. Also mention what are
the threats to biodiversity. 3
17. Who proved experimentally Oparin – Haldane hypothesis and how? 3
18. A doctor prescribed morphine as a sedative and pain killer to your cousin who has
undergone surgery. Even after recovery he continued to consume the prescribed
medicine. What do you conclude about his condition? After appraising yourself,
what measures will you suggest to him to control this problem? Briefly explain any
two. 3

19. a) In pBR322, foreign DNA has to be introduced in ampR region. From the
restriction enzymes given below, which one should be used and why:

PvuI, EcoRI, BamHI

b) Give reasons, why the other two enzymes cannot be used. 2+1

20. Over the years, it has been observed that some of the lakes are disappearing due
to urbanization. In absence of human interference, depict by making a flow chart,
how do the successional series progress from hydric to mesic condition. 3
21. Name the type of interaction seen in each of the following:
(i) Wasp pollinating fig inflorescence
(ii) Clown fish living among the tentacle of sea anemone

Scotland.
(vi) Ascaris worm living in the intestine of human 3

22.

SECTION-D

23. You find that a lake in your neighboring area has been covered by Water
hyacinth. You have contacted your friends to remove this weed. Nobody agrees to
support you. How will you explain the necessity of this? What values do you
have? 4

SECTION-E

24. (a) Draw a longitudinal section of a pistil of an angiosperm showing the growth
of the pollen tube up to the micropyle of the ovule. Label (i) stigma, (ii) embryo sac
