The Wildcat as w e know it today, has been devetopin.~ from
the early yc-’ra of the n~neteeuth century , when with the in—
creased si~ o of venu~1s it became nccessary to u~ie heavier
anchors, and. chain bo~an to replace rope hawsers.
At first , the chain was hauled in by rope messen~ers and
then attrvpts were made to haul in the chai n by w’rappin,g it
aroun d the c:
~,statn in the cane a~nner as mope . This led to
the desi gn of cap .tains wi th grips to accommo date chain links.
