RESEARCH

RESEARCH

•defined as an investigation done in

a systematic manner to reveal a
particular truth about a topic,
phenomenon, or reality
RESEARCH is an investigation

•It involves inquiry and looking

deeper into a topic.
•It is an activity that involves
discovering truths, facts or aspects
of reality
RESEARCH is systematic

•There is logic, discipline and a

procedure in going about it.
•Develops research questions,
review related literature, collect
and analyze data to form
conclusions.
RESEARCH reveals truth

•Research aims to unearth a fact,

an insight, or a realization about a
reality.
RESEARCH is about a topic,
phenomenon, or reality

•Research revolves around a

particular area of interest.
PURPOSE OF RESEARCH
Let’s Try This!

• Read the scenarios on the following slides.

Determine which purpose of research fits
each scenario.
A. To explore a topic
B. To describe a phenomenon
C. To explain the reasons for a certain
reality
A. To explore a topic
SCENARIO 1 B. To describe a phenomenon
C. To explain the reasons for a certain reality

A research student wanted to know

how their school’s student council works.
To find out, she interviewed current
student leaders, their adviser, and the
school principal. She also attended some
meetings of student council and joined
some of their activities.
A. To explore a topic
SCENARIO 2 B. To describe a phenomenon
C. To explain the reasons for a certain reality

Many know that dynamite fishing is illegal.

However, in a rural fishing community, some continue
to use this prohibited fishing technique to get a
bountiful catch. Upon hearing this problem, a
concerned citizen in a nearby town sought to find out
the fishing habits of these fisherfolk and the others
who use legal ways of fishing. She first went to a
coastal neighborhood to see how she could approach
the issue of dynamite fishing as the topic might be
sensitive to some people since it is illegal.
A. To explore a topic
SCENARIO 3 B. To describe a phenomenon
C. To explain the reasons for a certain reality

City A has observed that there is an

increase in the number of street families in
their area. They came up with several programs
to address the issue but many families still
continue to live in the streets. Hence, the city
administrator wants to find out why street
families remain where they live despite existing
government programs that cater to their needs.
A. To explore a topic
B. To describe a phenomenon
C. To explain the reasons for a certain reality
SCENARIO 1
B. -the research student wants to find out how the student
council works – describe their activities, processes and structures
SCENARIO 2
A. -the concerned citizen intends to conduct an exploratory
research to find the best approach to the topic of dynamite fishing
SCENARIO 3
C. -the city administration wants to accomplish an
explanatory research and find out why street families continue to
remain in the streets
Individuals engage in research for various
purposes. Babbie (2005) notes that there are
three main purpose of research:

✓TO EXPLORE
✓TO DESCRIBE
✓TO EXPLAIN
TO EXPLORE

EXPLORATORY RESEARCH
-best utilized in pioneering studies that focus on
topics that have not been investigated before or
that use new techniques in collecting and
analyzing data
-allows the researcher to become familiar with the
topic, come up with new ideas, direct the research
questions, and find out how to best approach the
topic under study
TO DESCRIBE

DESCRIPTIVE RESEARCH
-the researcher dives into the field of study and
simply describes what he or she has found out about
it
-done by painting a vivid picture of the scenario or
phenomenon using detailed descriptions of what the
researcher sees, feels, hears, tastes, and smells
Ex: how a particular group of people have been able
to cope with challenges they have faced in life
TO EXPLAIN

EXPLANATORY RESEARCH
-explain things, events and phenomena, discovering
the answers to “why” it has become so
-support or refute an explanation and link issues to
existing theories and frameworks
Ex: Why was the devastation so great in Leyte during
Yolanda typhoon?
Identify if the given
questions are exploratory,
descriptive or explanatory
research.
1. What activities does a drug rehabilitation facility conduct to help its
patients?
2. How is climate change awareness among the locals in Bohol influence
the provincial government’s disaster risk reduction and management
programs?
3. What are the people’s reactions towards Candidate X in a social media
forum?
4. What factors led to the growing HIV-AIDS cases in Metro Manila?
5. How do traditions, norms, and practices continue to be passed on in a
sorority?
