INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Social media helps to enhance student academic performance and increase

theirknowledge through data and information gathering, but many students
stick to their gadget without concentrating on their study. It is a bad idea to
waste awayJudicious time on social media platforms without gaining anything
from it. Students should not be carried away by social media platforms
because it will affect their academic performance.

Social media has a damaging effect on the lives of students since it can
negatively affect relationships with others, cause them to be inattentive and
can get cyber bullied.

Students will always have the choice of how well they do in school. They are
in controlof their own grades, and what they want to retain. Having the perfect
balance between a social media network and schoolwork can be achieved
through self-discipline and suitable scheduling students need to start changing
their habit of how much time they spend on social media. The purpose of this
research study is for Senior High School students to know the positive and
negative effects of the use of social media.

People all over the world have been enjoying the benefits of using technology
nowadays. In the past, communicating and free sharing of thought between
people are restricted by long distance, race, and even religion. But now these
barriers can no longer stop the flow of information and knowledge because now
the new world of social networking allows free sharing of thoughts through
online social networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and the
like.

Since students are highly motivated to using social media sites the majority
of them use these to satisfy their social needs more than their academic needs.
They have the freedom to do whatever they want – they can upload or download
data, they can make new friends and comment on other people’s lives, and
they can even create other online identities the real world does not allow.

It has been observed too that the majority of the students nowadays,
particularly those in the secondary level, spend most of their time chatting with
their acquaintances, playing online games, and watching videos instead of
reading their lessons, making their assignments, and other academic
requirements. The main reason is when they work or search their materials
online they get attracted to social networking sites to kill boredom during study
time, diverting their attention from their work. The darker side of this that has
gained the attention of many parents is that some students are getting lazier
and are no longer interested in going to school.

This is probably due to being extensively indulged to get global access and
therefore leading them to perform less academically.
Another critical thing that social media allows others to do are becoming
cyber bullies. The introduction of social media has brought about the
unfortunate rise of cyber bullying; a social concern that has taken previous
forms of harassment to a whole new level. Users who would ordinarily avoid
confrontation for fear of physical or lawful reprisals find themselves free to act
online as they wish, insulting and harassing others without consequence. The
masked identity that the Internet gives also causes other concerns for the
victim, with the unknown identity of the bully causing a heightened sense of
stress and anxiety.

In contrast to traditional types of bullying, cyber bullying allows those on the

Internet to post personal information. This is much worse than a face-to-face
type of scenario because online activity is permanent, meaning that it will
always stay on the Internet, allowing hundreds or even thousands of people
being able to view it. The views being untraceable, and the ready available
access to ‘share’, victims are surrounded by a mass scale of humiliation. There
is no doubt that cyber bullying is a horrible thing people can do through social
media.
