The Philippine Republic was established on July 4, 1946 after independence from the United States. The 1935 Constitution defined the government structure as having three co-equal branches - executive, legislative, and judicial - with separation of powers. Efforts to amend the 1935 Constitution began in 1970 and led to the drafting of a new 1973 Constitution, though the Constitutional Convention was interrupted by President Marcos declaring Martial Law in September 1972.
