ARE “NATIVE” TEACHERS NECESSARY FOR EFFECTIVE

ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING AND LEARNING IN

INDONESIA ? WHY OR WHY NOT ?

Author : Aldi Raenaldi

INTRODUCTION

The definition of a native speaker is that a person is a native speaker of the

language learnt first the other characteristics are incidental, describing how well an
individual uses the language. Using native speakers for English language learners in
Indonesia might help non-native speakers in the learning process in educational
institutions in Indonesia on the condition that native speakers have certificates or
diplomas that are qualified in the academic field so they are not limited to native
speakers. I think the native speaker will be effective if it is used in Indonesia by
bringing the native speakers' interests and motivation of students to increase because
there are new things that they will learn directly from the native speakers, their
problems will be answered immediately by asking the native speakers directly.

When students see native speakers will be a benchmark for their achievement.
They will approve and practice the original language that will talk about it. if students
can speak English well, then their motivation is more interactive. Native Speaker has
its advantages and disadvantages depending on the context which I implement it.
According to Stern (1983) claims native speakers can communicate in a social
environment, have speaking skills, have creativity using language. The native speaker
as a model in language teaching English. However, native speakers in teaching
English are an eternal problem, this is indirect evidence that native speakers must be
models for language teaching (Quirk, 1990)
Supporting Arguments

If appropriately implemented native speaker, have many benefits especially for

student motivation, pronunciation accuracy, proper use of grammar, have accurate
sources because students can learn directly with native speakers. Sharpening students'
abilities in English is better because direct learning is native speakers. According to
(Ellis, 1985). Non-native speakers can make grammatical mistakes and can use
constructions native speakers do not use that. In addition, their choice of words is
often not optimal and may even be wrong.

A native speaker has characteristics as expressed by Stern, as follows,

subconscious knowledge of rules, intuitive grasp of meanings, communication skills
within social settings, a range of language skills, and creativity of language use.
Without realizing it, they will motivate us to always hone our English skills. We can
also learn directly from native speakers how they say their words and accents in
English. and increase confidence in speaking English with native speakers. native
speakers also have spelling or spelling that is perfect, will help students when learning
English, especially in pronunciation. The ability to speak English naturally is the most
important thing in learning English.
The weakness of local teachers is that Pronunciation is less attractive than native
speakers. The language used is not standard, because they base it on a dictionary not
based on English habits. but there are also English teachers who master English
accents so they are like native speakers. and long-winded teaching methods don't have
to go straight to the point, Students can learn pronunciation directly from the authentic
source. That way, students can learn English effectively and efficiently since they
practice it in a real situation. Teachers and students can have effective communication
while discussing the materials and practising their fluency.

Opposing Arguments

Native speaker teachers have a big role in developing in terms of one's

conversational skills, this is because naturally, students can learn how to pronounce a
word, how to understand native speech and practice listening in the right way.
However, sometimes a native speaker who cannot speak Indonesian will find it
difficult to explain if students do not understand. Students sometimes confused with
what they will say if he forgets one vocabulary for example so they use sign language.

The local teacher will know the specific problems faced by students, also
examine the background of students and how they influence the learner because of
cultural similarities. Certified and qualified local teachers are arguably one of the
concrete proofs that learning advanced English is not impossible. Even if you have
lived in an English-speaking country, local teachers might even analyze the
similarities and differences between using English and Indonesian.
Advantages of learning with a local English teacher Understanding because using
Indonesian in explaining material is more affordable, learning materials are easy to
accept. they still need the local teachers, don't be replace by native speakers because
they function as explainers in understanding English principles. Thus, he/she can
transfer his/her experience and his/her strategies to the students (Alseweed, 2012).
Teachers should be good learner models. Based on these factors, it can be concluded
that non-native speakers have a more important role in improving students' English
skills.

Conclusion

The presence of native speakers in the classroom does indeed bring many benefits,
but the presence of native speakers who only have one person in the class can cause
distortion, ie they cannot use the actual situation in the target language community.
for early students, the presence of native speakers can be difficult, especially if these
native speakers cannot speak the local language and learners do not know the target
language at all. For this reason, it is better if the teaching using native speakers at an
early stage is not 100%. Not all native speakers are able, especially those who do not
have a teaching education background, who have a lack of teaching. He is not always
aware of how his own language functions, although he has more experience as a
language user. In teaching, he is more focused on oral skills, less strict, more tolerant.
Of course, the local English teacher is still needed in the world of education,
especially for elementary and junior high school education because the ability of
students at that age is still widely used for memorization, vocabulary has not arrived
to speak English. So native speakers will be effective if the students with medium
abilities are already familiar with the basics in English, will be more effective when
learning with native speakers.
