INTRODUCTION
When students see native speakers will be a benchmark for their achievement.
They will approve and practice the original language that will talk about it. if students
can speak English well, then their motivation is more interactive. Native Speaker has
its advantages and disadvantages depending on the context which I implement it.
According to Stern (1983) claims native speakers can communicate in a social
environment, have speaking skills, have creativity using language. The native speaker
as a model in language teaching English. However, native speakers in teaching
English are an eternal problem, this is indirect evidence that native speakers must be
models for language teaching (Quirk, 1990)
Supporting Arguments
Opposing Arguments
The local teacher will know the specific problems faced by students, also
examine the background of students and how they influence the learner because of
cultural similarities. Certified and qualified local teachers are arguably one of the
concrete proofs that learning advanced English is not impossible. Even if you have
lived in an English-speaking country, local teachers might even analyze the
similarities and differences between using English and Indonesian.
Advantages of learning with a local English teacher Understanding because using
Indonesian in explaining material is more affordable, learning materials are easy to
accept. they still need the local teachers, don't be replace by native speakers because
they function as explainers in understanding English principles. Thus, he/she can
transfer his/her experience and his/her strategies to the students (Alseweed, 2012).
Teachers should be good learner models. Based on these factors, it can be concluded
that non-native speakers have a more important role in improving students' English
skills.
Conclusion
The presence of native speakers in the classroom does indeed bring many benefits,
but the presence of native speakers who only have one person in the class can cause
distortion, ie they cannot use the actual situation in the target language community.
for early students, the presence of native speakers can be difficult, especially if these
native speakers cannot speak the local language and learners do not know the target
language at all. For this reason, it is better if the teaching using native speakers at an
early stage is not 100%. Not all native speakers are able, especially those who do not
have a teaching education background, who have a lack of teaching. He is not always
aware of how his own language functions, although he has more experience as a
language user. In teaching, he is more focused on oral skills, less strict, more tolerant.
Of course, the local English teacher is still needed in the world of education,
especially for elementary and junior high school education because the ability of
students at that age is still widely used for memorization, vocabulary has not arrived
to speak English. So native speakers will be effective if the students with medium
abilities are already familiar with the basics in English, will be more effective when
learning with native speakers.
