Introduction
Print making is an artistic practice that involves the transferring of images from one matrix to another
surface. Among other artistic disciplines, 1print making is considered to be the strictest with technical
limitations and rules. These rules and customs, considering print making a paper-based practice make
people think of it as a 2marginal or an inferior practice in comparison with what is considered as fine

The techniques and the application details were complicated and susceptible to misuse, therefore print
making has always been thought to be a career choice that may seem exotic. So this thesis aims to
interrogate to what extent the limitations of print has stopped people from pursuing it as a career and
will also propose how the 4contemporary print making, at its most significant, marks the present
through reconstructing past and anticipating futures. This thesis will also mention how the practice of
number of significant artists in Pakistan have generated conceptual and formal innovations in print
making that transcend local histories and conventions and have also built upon them and created new
means to it.
This thesis will use interviews as a methodology to examine how successful the artists have been in
expanding print making as an art practice in Pakistan. It will use open ended interviews with the
Pakistani print artists who would help us have firsthand information about their experience as a print
artist and also make us aware of the limitations and strengths of this discipline as a career option. So

program, since the previous research has not been helpful enough in fact, it has made the minds think of
print as an inferior discipline, portraying that it does not have enough scope. I myself had this mindset
before I got myself in doing print as my majors.
This thesis will mainly talk about the 5development and evolution of print making throughout the history
and how the new approaches towards art have allowed the rules and traditions of print to be violated.
Furthermore, it investigates how the new perspective towards art paved the way for print making artists
to create work incorporating different materials, mediums using knowledge of other disciplines. Will

also investigate how the collaboration with other departments/disciplines help create the most
innovative prints. For instance, a print maker artist who often use digital tools such as Photoshop to
develop their ideas. This clearly shows the relationship between a digital entity and how it is articulated
in print form.
However, this thesis will also seek to investigate the validity and significance of print making tradition to
cultural debate, not only that but will also question the role of traditional print in the digital age.
