Finding the GCF
Practice 1
The greatest common factor (GCF) is the largest whole number that divides evenly into multiple
numbers. Look at the two numbers in each problem and find the greatest common factor between
them. See the example below for a step by step process to finding the GCF.
Example
36 48 36 = 18 x 2 2 is a prime number and divides into 18 evenly 36 times.
2 2 36 = 9 x 2 x 2 18 can be divided by 2, leaving 9.
2 2 36 = 3 x 3 x 2 x 2 9 can be divided by 3, leaving 3. Now we have all prime
numbers.
3 2 48 = 24 x 2
Once you find the prime factors of the second number,
3 2 48 = 12 x 2 x 2 see which numbers they have in common. Circle and
multiply them to get your GCF. If there are no prime
3 48 = 6 x 2 x 2 x 2 factors in common, then the GCF is 1.
48 = 3 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 Numbers in common:

The greatest common factor (GCF) is the largest whole number that divides evenly into multiple
numbers. Look at the two numbers in each problem and find the greatest common factor between
them. See the example below for a step by step process to finding the GCF.
Example
54 90 54 = 27 x 2 2 is a prime number and divides into 54 evenly 27 times.
2 2 54 = 9 x 3 x 2 27 can be divided by 3, leaving 9.
3 3 54 = 3 x 3 x 3 x 2 9 can be divided by 3, leaving 3. Now we have all prime
numbers.
3 3 90 = 45 x 2
Once you find the prime factors of the second number,
3 5 90 = 9 x 5 x 2 see which numbers they have in common. Circle and
multiply them to get your GCF. If there are no prime
90 = 3 x 3 x 5 x 2 factors in common, then the GCF is 1.

The greatest common factor (GCF) is the largest whole number that divides evenly into multiple
numbers. Look at the two numbers in each problem and find the greatest common factor between
them. See the example below for a step by step process to finding the GCF.
Example
54 135 54 = 27 x 2 2 is a prime number and divides into 54 evenly 27 times.
2 3 54 = 9 x 3 x 2 27 can be divided by 3, leaving 9.
3 3 54 = 3 x 3 x 3 x 2 9 can be divided by 3, leaving 3. Now we have all prime
numbers.
3 3 135 = 27 x 5
Once you find the prime factors of the second number,
3 5 135 = 9 x 3 x 5 see which numbers they have in common. Circle and
multiply them to get your GCF. If there are no prime
135 = 3 x 3 x 3 x 5 factors in common, then the GCF is 1.

PRACTICE 1
Greatest Common Factor (GCF) is the largest factor that divides two numbers.
Example: Find the greatest common factor of 6 and 10.
1. Find the prime factors of each number.
6 = 2 x 3
10 = 2 x 5
2. Find the common prime factors that 6 and 10 have.
6 = 2 x 3
10 = 2 x 5
3. The common prime factor of 6 and 10 is 2.
Circle the common factors of the pair of numbers, then answer the questions.

GREATEST COMMON FACTOR
PRACTICE 2
Greatest Common Factor (GCF) is the largest factor that divides two numbers.
Example: Find the greatest common factor of 24 and 18.
1. Find the prime factors of each number.
24 = 6 x 4 18 = 6 x 3
= 2x3 x 2x2 = 2x3 x 3
2. Find the common prime factors of 24 and 18.
24 = 2 x 3 x 2 x 2
18 = 2 x 3 x 3
3. The common prime factors of 24 and 18 are 2 and 3.
The greatest common factor can be found by multiplying all the common prime
factors. Therefore, the greatest common factor of 24 and 18 is 2 x 3 = 6.
Find the greatest common factor of the numbers below.

LEAST COMMON MULTIPLE
PRACTICE 1
A multiple
multiply that number by every integer, starting with 1.
Example: The multiples of 2 are 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and so on.
Common multiples are numbers that share one or more of the same multiples.
