HiDefinition of Disease

Ascariasis is a common infection in developing countries that lack widespread, modern

sanitation.

A roundworm called Ascaris lumbricoides infects a person's small intestine and acts as a
parasite, getting nutrients from its host's intestinal tract.

Ascaris lumbricoides, along with whipworm and hookworm, is a type of parasite known as
a soil-transmitted helminth (STH).

Risk factors
Risk factors for developing ascariasis include:

● exposure to contaminated dirt

● visiting or living in a subtropical or tropical area
an absence of modern sanitation
● a lack of proper feces disposal
● using contaminated feces as fertilizer for crops

Symptoms
Ascariasis may not cause symptoms at first. However, as the infestation inside the small
intestine grows, a person may start to notice symptoms, including:

● abdominal pain or discomfort

● loss of appetite
● worms visible in stool
● vomiting
● impaired growth in children
● weight loss
● nausea
● diarrhea
● irregular bowel movements

Test for Diagnosis

The most common method of diagnosis involves a stool sample. Using a microscope, a
doctor can look for the parasite's eggs in a person's stool.

Some imaging techniques a doctor may use include:

● endoscopy to look inside the intestine

● computed tomography (CT) scan
● magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
● ultrasound
● X-ray
Local Data

Table 1. Ascariasis Data

This corresponded to 2,701 individuals in Luzon, 13,203 individuals in the Visayas and
19,669 individuals in Mindanao with complete information regarding STH infection status,
barangay geolocation and demography (i.e. age and sex) (Table 1). The mean observed
prevalence of A. lumbricoides was 23.7% for Luzon, 38.4% for the Visayas and 21.2% for
Mindanao.

Global Data
Ascariasis is the most common helminthic infection in humans, with an estimated 819
million people infected worldwide.3,36 As many as 400 million children are infected, and an
estimated 51 million children have severe morbidity resulting from heavy infections.
