STEP 1
Landfills are sites designated for dumping rubbish, garbage, or other sorts of
solid wastes. Historically, they are the most common means of disposing solid waste
which is either buried or left to pile in heaps. Landfill is a common phenomenon around
the world, especially due to the increased number of wastes from our homes, schools,
offices, hospitals, and markets. Some landfills are well managed and designed as part
of integrated waste management.

Some landfills are also used for waste management purposes, such as the
temporary storage, consolidation and transfer, or processing of waste material
(sorting, treatment, or recycling). Unless they are stabilized, these areas may
experience severe shaking or soil liquefaction of the ground during a large earthquake.
However, most communities leave the landfills unattended to which cause land

pollution and uncontrolled buildup of all sorts of solid waste materials .

One of the major pollution caused by the landfill is air pollution and atmospheric.
There are more than ten toxic gases emitted from landfills, of which methane gas is
the most serious. Aside from the methane gas, other household and agricultural
chemicals that find way to the landfills like bleach and ammonia can generate toxic
gases that can greatly impact the air quality within the landfill vicinity. Dust, particulate
matter and other non-chemical contaminates can also be expelled into the
atmosphere, further contributing to air quality issues.

Other than air pollution and atmospheric soil and land pollution also play a
major role is this landfill waste effect. Landfills directly render the soil and land where
it is located unusable. It also destroys the adjacent soil and land area because the
toxic chemicals spread over the surrounding soil with time. The upper layer of the soil
is damaged, distorting soil fertility and activity and affecting plant life. Industrial and
electronic wastes in the landfills destroy the quality of the soil and land thereby
upsetting the land ecosystems.
STEP 2: SOLUTIONS

Solution 1: Campaigns
Government and the responsible agency must work together to organize
the talk about awareness campaign to public. Spreading the poster or
advertisement and short video through social media about how rubbish disposal
can give a lot of bad effects to our environment.
Solution 2: Concept of 3R
The 3R concept is a combination and consists of reduce, reuse and
recycle: The first concept of reduce means that you have to reduce the daily
use of materials such as plastic, and paper. Second R concept is, reuse means,
you need to reuse as many items as possible before replacing them. They can
be reused for the same purpose or for other purposes. Recycling concepts are
processes that involve the collection, processing and re-use of waste materials.
Solution 3: Turning waste into energy
Waste-to-energy (WtE) or energy-from-waste (EfW) is the process of
generating energy in the form of electricity and/or heat from the primary
treatment of waste, or the processing of waste into a fuel source.
Solution 4: Create a compost pile
Natural waste in landfills occurs because we simply throw away
compostable materials. Food waste, lawn waste, and other organics can be
used locally with a compost pile. Then you can use this compost to create your
own garden.

Solution 5: Educating the Community

Education is the most powerful action that can be taken to born a

generation who concerned about the landfill issues. It is a continues process in
several level starting from pre-school until the higher education institution. This
step involved several changes in the curriculum in few subject such as
Pendidikan Moral, Pendidikan Sivik dan Kewarganegaraan & Pendidikan Islam.

STEP 5

As a conclusion, create a compost pile will be the best solution for landfill waste.
Because it consumes less time, medium human behavior and it is not compulsory to
gain an authority from ministration. This is the one of the easiest way to conduct by
the community to reduce landfill waste.
