We use two coordinates latitude and longitude to find places and

points on Earth.

These imaginary lines are:

• Longitude lines are called meridians and they run from north to
south. Longitude is the distance from East to West of the Prime or
Greenwich Meridian.

The Prime Meridian is a vertical line at 0º that divides the earth

into two hemispheres: Eastern and Western.

• Latitude lines are called parallels and they run from east to west.
Latitude is the distance from North to South of the Equator.

The Equator is a horizontal line at 0º that divides the earth into two
hemispheres: Northern and Southern.

Other important parallels are: The Tropic of Cancer at 23ºN, the

Tropic of Capricorn at 23ºS, the Arctic Circle at 66ºN and the
Antarctic Circle at 66ºS.
