LISTENING LESSON 1

TOPIC: FOOD

VN TEACHER: (2mins)

Hello! Welcome to _______________ (state what you want to call this video lesson).

My name is ________________.

Many people think that English is very difficult especially speaking the language fluently. In these videos,
we will help you improve your English skills through listening first. You might say, why listening?
Shouldn’t that be speaking first because I really want to talk in English. I want to talk to native people in
English. Yes, you are right. Our lessons will eventually make you become a good speaker of the English
language.

Let me explain why you need to have good listening skill first. It is basic that in communication, we listen
more than we talk.

(do TPR...actions here showing ears for listening and mouth for speaking)

What I’m saying is that we can only communicate or exchange our ideas with other people when we
listen well. Imagine if you do not hear what your friend is telling you. How can you respond correctly?
You see, if you listen correctly, you have a greater chance to speak and say words correctly. The way
you hear words being said is exactly the way you will use it in your next conversation.

So, I hope that you will have fun with these videos and learn how to listen and say words in the right
way, like the native speakers do.

For the first lesson, you will listen to people talking about food. Every day we eat and we also listen to
foreigners talking about food or maybe ask you about food here in Vietnam. Many times, it is difficult to
say that in English, right?

In today’s lesson, you will learn words about how to describe food. So next time a foreigner asks you
about food, you will be more confident to speak in English.

Click the video to access the lesson. (not sure about this. Just please say how they can start the lesson
with native teacher)

TEACHER:
Hello, my name is __________________. How are you?

What is something that you do day in and day out? (tries to listen…)

Go to school? Play with friends? Ok… but what is something you do at least three times a day?

Brush your teeth? Well, almost there… mmm.. what do you do before actually brushing your teeth?

Yes, eat. Great job!

(Thumbs up)

Maybe some of you make eating as a hobby. That’s totally fine don’t worry. I just love eating, too. The
problem is sometimes you may find it difficult to explain to a foreign friend about the food you ate.
Guess, what? I have a solution for you.

(smile with an idea balloon on top of her head)

Today, we will learn vocabulary about food and drinks. We will also listen to conversations and about
food. So hang in there and join me in this lesson.

(cut – show the standard slide for the videos)

So, first, let’s talk about words describing foods. First off, mmm… let’s Do you see this picture?

(show a picture—can be from the book)

What do you see? There are different foods. Listen and repeat the words as you hear.

(focus show words from the picture and let teacher say each)

Foods have different tastes, don’t they? Our tongue can taste 4 distinct tastes. There are sweet, sour,
salty, and bitter foods.

Sweet foods include candy and ice cream

(picture of the items pop out as idea balloons)

Green mango and vinegar are sour foods.

(picture of the items pop out as idea balloons)

There are also salty foods like salt and pizza.

(picture of the items pop out as idea balloons)

Most kids do not like bitter melon because of its taste.

(picture of the items pop out as idea balloons)

Let’s read the sentence below:

"I'm so hungry that just looking at the fruit makes my mouth water."
