An Overview in Solidarity

By Kehm Angel Socayre

The world in our generation today is cruel. Social issues have been existing time after time
around the globe. Environmental issues that concerns our deteriorating planet, issues in religion
that has conflicting beliefs in diversified regions, issues of economy from countries who owes big
debts to 3rd world nations and many more. These problems breed another set of problems that
challenges citizens of each nation to form a solution, but how are we going to make a solution if
the problem itself starts with the people? People who believes that their problem should be
addressed first before the other. Majority asks for help, minority doesn’t really do something that
would change the system and only few are willing to address the real problem. In the Philippines
per se, a lot of issues have been raised and some of these are quite alarming that may even cause
danger to other people. Teenage pregnancy, war on drugs, rape, murder, unjustified killings,
terrorism, poverty, corruption, etc. These are only few out of many problems that our developing
country is facing. We can ask ourselves, does solidarity exist in our nation? Some may say no,
some tried but then on failed, some may still be willing, and some may have already lost their
hope. Our country indeed is in dire need of solidarity. A strong sense of unity that aspires
collectivism in order to improve our nation. A strong linkage where people help each other for the
common good. But not all of the people see the value, because not all of them sees the big problem.
Since solidarity is not just a word with meaning, it is a word that needs action, but action
to solidarity is difficult. As we can see, people in this generation are disparate in many ways, such
as beliefs, status, social standing and personalities. These differences create complications that
may result to misunderstandings, confusions and aggravated issues. Take an example of a religious
person who wants to impose his/her religion, but the other person disagrees, instead of accepting
the decision that person made, he inflicts pain to the other just because he has different
interpretations of their holy scripture. This is a clear example of the problem of differences. By
this we can infer that unity is something that is blurry and hard to achieve in a totally diversified
world. Also, one problem that made solidarity hard to achieve is that a lot of people have distorted
compass of their morale. Many are unfortunate since not all families have groomed their children
well. Not all are well taught, and a lot were disregarded and abandoned. Simply imagine a child
who learned a strong sense of empathy from his/her parents, that child will grow as a person who
seeks to put his/herself in another person shoes before concluding, and he/she will understand the
perspective of the person. If we are only taught and groomed to be an efficient person who can
serve a good function for our nation, we can give a contribution. If each and every one of us are
taught well enough, that good contribution can be a macro contribution that will manifest the
solidarity that we have as Filipino’s.
For people to achieve solidarity they must practice empathy. They need to understand the
perspective of different people to be able to stand in one common ground. One should be able to
understand someone’s upbringing and why that person has a different belief from you. Second,
they must abandon negative mentalities such as stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination to
transcend boundaries from each other. The pre-conceived thoughts of some groups give off an
unhealthy division that denies unity among them. Stratification is one thing that hinders the
becoming of solidarity. Third, they should have a common goal to stand up for and they must be
willing to commit and to fight for it. It should not just be a mere belief but there should also be
faith that doesn’t waver. Lastly, the members should help one another. People should abolish and
leave behind their selfishness and greed. Since solidarity is aiming for one common good and it
always seeks to help the members of the society to be uplifted. There are also a lot of propositions
for solution of our unending problems, but we keep on getting back to square one. This just proves
that our idea isn’t working, and we need to make a new one. When we generate ideas it is also
important to hear each and every member in order to agree for a solution that fits the problem
without risking anyone’s expense. The solution should be agreed and understood by every member
so that no one will be left. If only we seek to make this idea possible before it will be too late.
