Basic Elements in A Short Story
Exposition or introduction
It’s the information we need to understand what will happen during the time frame of
the story. It consists of the background (antecedentes) information.
Complication
Climax or crisis
It’s the turning point in the story that occurs when characters try to resolve the
complication.
Resolution/the end
It’s a moment of startling (alarmante), sudden insight gained by the main character
as a result of the unfolding of events in the story.
The setting
The location of the story’s action and the time of the story.
The theme
In a piece of fiction, the theme is its view about life and how people behave in the
story, usually the narrator’s vision.
The plot is different from the story. The story is a chronological sequence but the plot
can rearrange the elements of the story such that, for instance, the end is narrated
before the beginning. In such an instance, the plot uses the devise of flashback. To
give you another example, in a detective story, the initial action is not disclosed to
the reader until nearly the end, thereby producing the element of suspense.
The plot explores the casual connection between the episodes of a story.
The characters
In a story we have the major characters and the minor characters. Among (entre)
the major characters we find the protagonist (the leading character) and the
antagonist (the force acting against the main character).
The narrator
Who tells the story? The narrator. There are various types of narrators. For the
purpose of this course, let’s just mention three types of them:
a)Third person point of view. The narrator does not participatein the action of the story
as one of the characters, but lets us know about the events and characters. It’s an
outside voice.
b)First presence point of view. Here the narrator participates in the action of the story.
He or she is one of the characters. An inside voice.
