Program Overview I
MOOC #1
Course: Teaching Character and Creating Positive Classrooms

Taught by: Dave Levin

Overview: I found this program by browsing through Coursera. I wanted to join a MOOC that would
encourage me to implement new teaching strategies next year. As a third year teacher, I’m constantly
looking for new ways to improve my practice. As it turns out, participating in a MOOC is a great way to
improve in this area. I’m also a firm believer that students should be introduced to character strengths
that can help them succeed in the future. Educators should be excited about molding future generations in
a positive way. This can ultimately lead to a better society for our successors.
Overall Experience

This is a 5 week course designed for teachers and students hoping to learn new ways to promote
character growth in education. Levin emphasized character strengths such as self-control, gratitude and
social intelligence all of which, he stated, could be incorporated in today’s curriculum. The assignments in
this MOOC consisted of writing letters, completing surveys, responding to reflection questions and
watching videos on educators who consistently teach character strengths to their students. Anyone
completing this MOOC would most likely spend at least 3-4 hours per week on completing the weekly
tasks. Such tasks include reading through content, watching videos related to the topic, and writing
reflections. Although such a list may seem daunting, participants will most likely feel really excited about
teaching in way that encourages students to be the best they can be in every aspect of their life.
Reflection on Literacy Skills

This activity revealed some of the ways in which educators can acquire more ICT Literacy skills to

better serve our students. Being more aware of the resources available on the WWW can help us be more
informed and better equipped to provide students with a quality 21st century education. MOOCS are just
one of many resources educators can utilize to stay on the life-long learner track. MOOCS are a great way
for teachers to educate themselves or become more informed on a variety of subjects that can ultimately
come together to form better educators. After becoming more familiar with MOOCS, I intend to spend

more time learning more about my deviating subjects of interest.

MOOC #2
Course: The Meat We Eat

Program delivered by: Coursera

Overview: I found this MOOC by browsing through the list of available courses on Coursera. In addition
to the first MOOC I participated in, I decided to join another MOOC for fun. Lately, my wife and I have
been thinking about becoming vegan due to some health issues she’s been struggling with. However, this
is not going to be an easy transition for me as a lover of all meat. In order to fully support her though, it is
best we both share the same diet. As a result, I decided to take this course to educate myself on the
quality, safety, healthfulness, and sustainability of muscle foods.. Throughout my life, meat has always
been my first choice for protein consumption but the after participating in this MOOC, I realized there
are so many different substitutes for protein that don’t require eating meat.
Overall Experience for MOOC II

This was a four week course that focused on various topics related to the quality, safety, and
healthfulness of the meat we eat. Each week consisted of a combination of videos, readings, and a quiz at
the end of the week. The first week focused on the US meat industry and compared it to the European
meat industry. I learned about several questionable practices in our meat industry that actually
encouraged me to change my diet. The remainder of the course focused on consumption safety, meat
quality, fabrication, and packaging. Overall, I learned a lot about our meat industry and the way it is
distributed to thousands of supermarkets across the country. It also gave me more insight as to why
certain meats have caused health issues for many people including my wife. After reviewing this course, I
am certainly more compelled to support my wife in her decision to become vegan.
