Abstract expressionism
HILLS OF NIKKO
JOSE T. JOYA
 One such fine example of non-figurative abstract expressionism is the Hills of
Nikko. It is the artist’s interpretation of one of the existing hills in Nikko, Japan.
During wintertime, the hill’s imperfections are thoroughly covered by snow.
However, during summertime, those imperfections are expressed by the artist in
terms of bold brush strokes and super-imposition of lines.
 The painting is actually an allegory to human imperfections. The earth colors

symbolize the weaknesses and limitations of humanity while the hues of greens
and blues represent life and hope. The white background represents the snow
that starts to envelop the mound. In the process, the entire imperfection will be
covered thus presenting the cycle of life.
1. How did you say that this painting is a realist painting?

- Because, the artwork has a symbolic meaning and also it symbolizes the
human life’s. He also explains that the color he indicates in his artwork has a
significant meaning when you go deeper and you will be truly amazed.

- It shows how mother love her child. Mother’s love is a feeling, something
which requires unlimited words to explain because it is as deep as an ocean.
After coming into word we find secure our salves in the lap of our mother.
Without out even speaking she understands what we want. Mother’s love
always encourages us in any falls which comes in life. She is only a person
who has no demands except our best future.
Realism
DOOMED FAMILY
DOMINADOR CASTANEDA
 Doomed Family was made by Dominador Castaneda, it was painted in
the year 1945, this was the time of Japanese invasion in the
Philippines. This painting conveys the idea of what Japanese did to the
Filipino family,and many people have died during their time. I think this
painting is also telling us that we should always remember and give
importance to the sacrifices made by the Filipinos in order to have our
freedom back.

- Way back then, we all know that this situation is really happening not just in
the time of the Japanese period but also in the present time. Just like for
example, Many Filipinos are suffering nowadays just like the Overseas filipino
workers, who work abroad but as a result they are being abused by their
bosses and used their weaknesses so that they can do whatever they want to
the Filipino workers.

PHILAM LIFE
 In the 1960s, the Philippine-American General Life Insurance
Company (Philam Life) commissioned Vicente S. Manansala (1910-
1981) to create seven large paintings for its building in UN Avenue,
Ermita, Manila. This set of rural-themed, cubist paintings from the
Philam Life Collection are now on loan to the National Museum for the
public to enjoy.

- It is a realist painting mainly because, it simple tells us how the Filipinos lived
way back then. The painting reminds us our memories from our childhood
past, it was very inspiring to see how beautiful and peaceful our country was.

NORMA BELLEZA
 Norma Jaciledo Belleza (3 May 1939) is a painter who began by painting dark
and sombre representations of religious subjects. Then, she progressed into
colorful and detailed works on folk genre subjects, including Metro Manila aides,
peasants in various rural activities, women vendors, and potters.

- “The Pottery Makers” painting made by Norma Belleza. Similar to “The
Fishermen” painting a while ago. It shows how hard working Filipinos are. I
chose this painting because I’m really amazed how these artists show some
of the characteristics of the Filipinos that we’re proud of in such a beautiful
way.

 If you will paint something, will it be like your favorite?
- If I would be given a chance to paint one paintings, I will choose the doomed
family. Because, we Filipino people are family oriented, we are willing to
sacrifice everything for our family even if it means our own happiness or lives.
Just like the overseas filipino workers, they are sacrificing abroad just to give
a better life for their families, even if they struggles a lot there they keep on
fighting just like in the painting say that we should give importance to the
sacrifices made by Filipinos in order to have freedom back.
3. How can museums help in appreciating arts?

- Museums has a big contribution when it comes in appreciating arts. It
displays the paintings of our great artists and how they are inspired in making
those masterpieces. Plus, museums inspired people to create new kinds of
masterpieces, and they helped our artists to be known for their masterpieces
and gave them an appreciation for their works.
