Code Converters

The document discusses various binary codes used in digital systems and how to convert between them. It describes Binary Coded Decimal (BCD), Excess-3 code, and Gray code. It then provides truth tables, K-map simplifications, and logic diagrams for converters between BCD, Excess-3, binary, and Gray codes. The purpose is to illustrate the design of basic code converters between common coding schemes.

Code Converters

• There are variety of binary codes used in

digital systems. Many Times it required to
convert one code to another. Some of these
codes are
– BCD (Binary Coded Decimal)
– Excess-3 Code
– Gray Code

BCD-Excess 3 Converter
• Excess-3 code is a
modified form of a BCD
number.
• The Excess-3 code can
be derived from the
BCD code by adding 3
to each coded number.
• Eg: BCD number 0001
0010 is represented as Truth Table

0100 0101 in Excess-3

code
