GOVERNOR BUSH APPOINTS JOSEPH LEWIS, JR.


TO THE FIRST DISTRICT COURT OF APPEAL
TALLAHASSEE -- Governor Jeb Bush today announced the appointment of Joseph

Lewis, Jr. to the 1st District Court of Appeal. The 1st District Court of Appeal covers, Alachua,

Baker, Bay, Bradford, Calhoun, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Escambia, Franklin, Gadsden,

Gilchrist, Gulf, Hamilton, Holmes, Jackson, Jefferson, Lafayette, Leon, Levy, Liberty, Madison,

Nassau, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Suwannee, Taylor, Union, Wakulla, Walton and Washington

counties. Lewis will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Arthur Lawrence, Jr.

“Joseph’s extensive knowledge of the law and the judicial process will serve the citizens of

this district well,” Governor Bush said. “He will bring dedication to the community, patience and

compassion to the bench.”

Lewis, 47, of Tallahassee, is an “AV” rated attorney and is currently bureau chief of the

employment litigation branch/civil litigation section of the Attorney General’s office. He has served

in the Attorney General’s office since 1981. Prior to joining the Attorney General’s office, Lewis

served as an assistant public defender in Leon County from 1978 thru 1981. Lewis will be the

second African-American to serve on the 1st District Court of Appeal since its creation.

Lewis received his undergraduate degree from the University of Montana in 1974, and his

Juris Doctorate degree from Florida State University of College of Law in 1977.
